Love this CD. Don't know how they would split it if it was on vinyl. Every idea (there are no 'tracks' that I can really identify) slides into the next and it is clear that some kind of long story is being told. Me - I'm not a lyrics man so I can't tell you what its about. Something worth 49 minutes, about cars.
Pompous prog rock? I wouldn't say so. Just continually interesting and varied - one nice surprise after another. They can play and they can also sing - nice that.
I'm thinking of another long piece - Porcupine Tree's The Incident. Now that one IS songs (is it 17?) with very effective bridges and links but it doesn't flow like Mei.
And yes - there are songs you can sing along to and there is that stunning excilarating choppy 5 minutes at 9 minutes in...

What's it all about then?
I've no idea; but there are enticing themes and intriguing lyrics which keep you coming back for another listen (and I'm still none the wiser).
Echolyn are quite unlike anything else I've heard. Progressive but not Prog - but still containing many of the elements that define the latter.

And look at the price of the MP3 version!!!

The MP3 was a fantastic deal. One track spanning over 45minutes, with spiritual themes, well worth the price and nice to take on a long bike/car ride.

If this band and album were widely known they/it would be right up there with the greats of progressive music.

I'm not going to spend time dissecting the music and lyrics, which would take away much of the mystery that is Mei. Suffice to say it is an amazing piece of music, which like many amazing pieces of music, takes a while to get into, but the the rewards are boundless. It strikes me as an extremely personal piece of work, and one that each band member has fully particpated in creating, rather than being the brainchild of a single individual. They really mean what they're playing and that commitment shines through. It is this quality that gives Mei its soul, adding something unique to complement the obvious high quality musicianship and compositional brilliance. It has personality ....a life of its own that reaches beyond the notes and words.

A truly outstanding achievment.
