Nu-metal has started to rust somewhat, and these razor-sharp pieces of musical shrapnel effectively sidestep a rehash. "Decompression Period" is surprisingly moving, and "Life Is a Bullet" and "M-80" are both startling and original. It's occasionally let down by a processed, over-produced glossy sheen: vacuum-packed, detuned guitar riffs, a sealed tub of well-calculated angst and a gruff vocal that is somehow mandatory in conveying these feelings of frustration to a supposedly messed-up, disenfranchised generation.
There's a lot of rock, but not an awful lot of roll. It's dense--but only superficially. For the heaviest album ever written, honours could go to U2's Achtung Baby, who's distress is less in your face and more playful than anything on lovehatetragedy, which makes it far more effective. There's wallowing to be had here, though, as its sonic hooks leap out and snag onto your dark thoughts through clenched teeth and damp eyes. This is what made Papa Roach special first-time round, and this is what makes them so appealing now. --Ben Johncock

Is Lovehatetragedy really that good?,

Yes Lovehatetragedy is really that good. Many thought Papa Roach couldn't live up to their past success of their 'Infest' album, but the new album is a new direction and will surely maintain the sma esuccess as their previous album. The album opens with 'M-80' a fast moving, hard hitting song that breaks the ice for how rock this album really is. Overall, the album never drops below par and is evidence that Papa Roach surely stand-out as a great band, among the huge influx of new American bands aiming for the big-time.

CAUGHT BETWEEN TWO STOOLS....,

I have time for this act, I think it's good the way that they are attempting a sound akin to 80's Hard Rock/Metal ala Motley Crue, yet allied to modern sensibilities & production.
However, this is a dissapointing release living up to it's mediocre reputation. I'm generous in awarding 3 stars as the musicianship & production are of a decent standard BUT it's the songwriting that really lets the album down. It's average at best, with little in the way of memorable riffs, hooks or tunes. The first release, Infest, was one of the better courses of Nu Metal served. However this seems to fall into a bit of a no mans land between that early aggression & freshness and the later, much improved songwriting of Getting Away With Murder and The Paramour Sessions. It's just, well, boring! It is regarded as a low point - hell, there aren't even any Maiden style harmonies to save this!! True, there is some decent bass, and the odd, decent tune but it's all filler really. Already the Rap and samples/turntables are beginning to diminish but possibly the band were not ready to evolve?? What I would say is buy the 2 x aforementioned later albums, and (although a bit dated & lyrically iffy) the debut Infest. Skip this as it really is a forgettable album, that sounds like a band treading water.

Nice followup,
This review is from: lovehatetragedy (Audio CD)
They hit back with more maturity, but equally enjoyable sounds and words for the upsets of life. As it doesn't differ too much from the first it can be considered a little dull but I enjoy playing it every now and then.
