THE carriage gave another lurch, and Maria Merry-weather, Miss Heliotrope, and Wiggins once more fell into each other's arms, sighed, gasped, righted themselves, and fixed their attention upon those objects which were for each of them at this trying moment the source of courage and strength. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars magical! 2 Jun 2005
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
You have to be prepared to read this book with an open mind, as if you were a child. I read it first when I was 10 and I was enthralled. Its old-fashioned and romantic, with a touch of the surreal. The modern child with little knowledge of victorian history may find it a little strange at first but its worth persevering.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well loved favourite 21 July 2006
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have just purchased a copy of this book for my Daughter , as she has heard me tell her many times about why I love this story, and she wanted a copy of her own.

Yes it is outdated in terms of todays literature, but I love it because it captures my imagination and takes me away to a simple , uncluttered way of life. It is a story where children not only learn values, but are valued!!

Marmaduke Scarlet's tea parties sound fantastic, and I love the descriptions of the rooms and the characters come to life, with all their quirks and foibles. Elizabeth Goudge has a skill for telling stories with meanings on many levels , and this should not be written off as just a childrens story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Youth revisited 3 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
I have just re- read The Little White Horse in one sitting on a beach in Tenerife. It is 25 years since I last read it and indeed had it read to me and I was immediately transported into a richly descriptive and morally fair world which I had forgotten. The warmth of the writing stayed with me and as my copy is battered I thought I would see if it is still in print and lo and behold here it is. Having read the reviews it would appear to me that the two critics who didn't like it came to the story later in life -the rest of us fans are re-reading a delight from childhood and revisiting feelings we had as children. You do have to view the words in historical context ( as you do with other writers such as Enid Blyton) but that doesn't detract from what is a great story for 8+ year old little girls who still want a bit of magic from a bygone age.
