5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to jQuery Mobile 22 Oct. 2013
By Dirk Gomez - Published on
"jQuery Mobile Web Development Essentials - Second Edition" promises a gentle and beginner-friendly introduction to jQuery mobile and creating mobile-friendly websites with it and it keeps that promise. It's an easy and pleasant read and it helps you get up to speed with mobile development and jQuery mobile. I read the PDF version which is as good as print book. The book isn't littered with a lot of code samples, instead you are supposed to download those from the authors' GitHub pages. It is not a reference manual or a book for an experienced mobile developer.

The book should be read chapter by chapter because they are built on top of each other. The first chapters introduce jQuery mobile without requiring a lot of knowledge of neither JavaScript nor programming: how to use jQuery to make pages mobile-friendly, how to use headers, footers, and toolbars, and how to create mobile-friendly lists.

The first example project is a very simple hotel website, which actually provides for a good example: I wish most hotel websites were at least that effective on phones.

Chapter 8 is about creating a simple notekeeping application and it has the first bits of JavaScript code, albeit very simple code. The following chapters are more involved and cover jQuery Mobile configuration and events like scrolling, orientation, and touching. The authors also dive a bit into theming and then showcase PhoneGap. The third example in the book's final chapter is an RSS reader that the authors turn into a full (and simple) mobile application with PhoneGap.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful introduction for mobile developers 3 Dec. 2013
By Rachel Mccollin - Published on
As someone whose experience of mobile development is with responsive design and CSS, I found this book a useful introduction to using jQuery for mobile development. It takes you through a logical process from beginning your first jQuery mobile project, through to developing that project and producing a mobile site. For experienced users of jQuery it may be a little basic but as its title includes the word 'essentials', that's not a surprise. Useful for people who are new to the technology, though.

3.0 out of 5 stars a little lean on content 23 Oct. 2013

I thought the book was written and structured well. However, the content was a bit too lean. I think a few more chapters with some advanced sample projects would have prompted me to issue a higher rating.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clear and to the point 16 Dec. 2013
By John - Published on
This is a shorter book that helps you get the subject without lots of chatter. Ray and Andy (the authors) have been great developers and web development conference speakers actively involved in the community and open source. if you want to get a great intro to web mobile development this book will be a superb selection.
5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent way to learn mobile development quickly! 2 Jan. 2014
By James Gonzales - Published on
This was the first jQuery mobile book I read and I found it very easy to go through the examples and learn the features of mobile development. The first few chapters show you mobile development techniques such as lists, forms, pages, and content formatting that you reuse in a project in chapter 8. This reinforces the things you learned in chapters 1 through 7.

Then you are shown configuration options, with samples of their use, that you have in jQuery mobile development. jQuery mobile also exposes events and you are shown how to use these with actions like touch, swipe, scroll, and others. You can run the examples provided to see how these work.

A neat feature I liked was how the book shows you how to use Adobe's PhoneGap Build service to change a jQuery mobile application into native applications for mobile devices. PhoneGap Build service isn't free but the books shows how developers can use it free.
