An introduction to some of my favourite horrors.
Aisha I'm Vibrating "I can't help myself."
The Shining [DVD]
"Absolutely iconic images, deservedly a classic. Isolation is a wonderful basis for horror."
Ringu [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
"A slow atmospheric build up to the scariest scene from a horror film I have ever witnessed. Fantastic, and no gore in sight! Genuinely chilling."
Carnival Of Souls [DVD]
"Highly influenced by the era of silent films, creepy and disturbing and highly underrated."
Werner Herzog Box Set 2 [DVD]
"Specifically 'Even Dwarves Start Small', cinematically not very adventerous, but a very very strange film, uncomfortable viewing at times, unfilmable these days, completely unforgettable."
Audition (Collector's Edition) [DVD]
"My favourite Takashi Miike film, very understated for him, but deeply unsettling, brilliant sense of disorientation throughout, memorable images, and goes right for the castration fear of all men."
The Descent (2 Disc Special Edition) [DVD]
"Ending a bit predictable but a very atmospheric horror film done very well."
Suspiria 2 Disc Special Edition [DVD]
"A little bit dated but a brilliant setting for horror and wonderful music by Goblin."
"It was a tossup between this and Blue Velvet for my Lynch choice but Dennis Potter makes me laugh in the latter so I'm opting for the memorably bizarre Eraserhead."
A Tale Of Two Sisters [DVD]
"Easy to pass off as another J-horror Ring inspired film but it has an excellent story, brilliant sense of disorientation, terrifying scenes, and ultimately deeply sad. Brilliantly shot. Loved it."
The Grudge [DVD]
"I would have enjoyed the film plot more if it had put a little more care and attention to the ghosts rather than the very brief back story, this aside if you want relentless scares then this works!"
The Wicker Man - The Director's Cut (DVD)
"Perhaps all the scarier because of its absolute Englishness, Christopher Lee is very disturbing in arguably his best ever portrayal."
An American Werewolf In London (Special Edition) [DVD]
"Rarely does a film invoke great comedy and great scares. Classic werewolf fare."
Videodrome [DVD]
"Snuff movies are a repulsive and terrifying thought, add to that Cronenbergs surreal story makes for a very bizarre and rather scary film."
House Of Wax [DVD]
"I know its a remake so to say 'imaginative' is maybe a bit superfluous. Wonderfully ludicrous, a brilliant melting wax set, and who doesn't want to see Paris Hilton's infamous death scene!"
Theatre Of Blood [DVD]
"OK it didn't scare me but I love this film! Delightfully tongue in cheek with the equally delightful Vincent Price, and one of the best deaths/premise for a horror film ever!"
Ginger Snaps [DVD]
"Easy to dismiss as basically not very good, but actually very tongue in cheek and well cast, also one of the most memorable opening title sequence I've seen in any film. Modern gothic horror."
Session 9 [DVD]
"Excellent setting for a horror film. A very effective creepy film that'll leave you cringing (in the way a good horror film should)."
Candyman : Collectors Edition [DVD]
"Perhaps the best thing about this film is the brilliant score by Philip Glass. Very gritty, very bloody, very good horror!"
Dawn Of The Dead [DVD]
"Perhaps the best of Romero's living dead films. Classic zombie movie that doesn't suffer the contagious naffness in so many other of the same genre."
"I wasn't expecting a lot from this film but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Not particularly scary, it's not a film about sudden shocks, but it is a cult worthy central performance, great!"
The Bride Of Frankenstein [DVD]
"Overrated cinemetically (Gone With The Wind only made a year or so later, compare) but wonderfully iconic and very enjoyable."
Cabin Fever [DVD]
"Blackly comic and stomach churning. A simple idea executed very well with good attention to detail and a laugh out loud final line."
Stephen King Collector's Set [DVD]
"Misery is a classic film, the foot ankle breaking scene is one of the most horrifying scene in any genre. Sissy Spacek is wonderfully strange as Carrie, and The Dark Half was enjoyable."
A Nightmare On Elm Street [DVD]
"The original and best when Freddy was a genuinely terrifying villain rather than a camp icon (he's supposed to be a child molesting murderer, we shouldn't like him people!)."
Psycho/The Birds [DVD]
"Hitchcock delivers memorable scares and paranoia... plus birds scare me."
