5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Piece of Kit 29 July 2008
I bought this as a cheap alternative to buying a External drive with a hard drive already included. I had a second drive in my machine which has all my music on it, but I was becoming concerned about the amount of time this drive was spinning and know from bitter experience that drives do eventually fail!. This enclosure took me 10 minutes to have up and working on a windows XP home edition machine. the enclosure is accessed from the back via four tiny screws (they even supply the screwdriver) and slides out. You then screw the drive into the frame with the screws supplied and slide it back inside the enclosure and screw it back up. it comes supplied with a USB lead and power lead with a transformer built into it. the front of the drive has a light to signify its working and the light changes colour and flickers when the drive is in in use. there is a on-off switch on the back which i recommend leaving off if your not going to use the drive for a while, as this saves drive life. The only negative thing about this enclosure is its not really hot swappable as you have to access the back via 4 screws to get to the drive to swap it. I am inclined to leave these screws out so i can change drives or I may just get another as 16 seems reasonable. this little enclosure even has a fan, great bit of kit I recommend for this price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good External Hard Drive Caddy 10 Nov 2008
Verified Purchase
I had been using an external western digital hard drive for about 4 years when it stopped working. The drive would no longer power on. I contacted western digital and it would have cost a few hundred pounds to get the drive looked at and repaired by one of their accredited retailers.

I decided to open up the external casing and remove the drive. After having a look in numerous places for a casing for my hard drive I settled on this one.

The box does not come with a manual but that's not a problem as its not rocket science. All you need to do is remove the screws on the back of the casing then insert and connect your hard drive.

The box comes with a screw driver, power cables, surprisingly the usb cable as most external hard drives don't supply this, a stand to keep the casing in, and a CD (I think that has backup software on it).

Once everything was connected up the driver powered on and I haven't had any problems with it. I can now access all my files again :-)

This was definitely a better buy than getting western digital for fix my problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent investment. 7 Oct 2009
By D. Bull
I decided to purchase the product after I scrapped an old Windows 98 pc, and had removed the hard drive for security. I realised I had 40Gb of memory that I was about to destroy with a hammer!
For the cost of a 2Gb memory stick I purchased this piece of kit. It did exactly what it said on the box, and installation is pretty basic, done in about two minutes and no need for instructions, which is lucky because the instructions are supposedly in the 'Manual' on the mini-disc supplied, but really tells you very little.(the only negative thing I could say about the product).
In 5 minutes after plugging in the supplied transformer to the mains, and the USB into the PC, I was accessing the Drive and re-living old memories from the photos on the drive which I had forgotten were there.

After half an hour of deleting the unwanted contents of my old hard drive I had an empty 40G of usable space. There are plenty of old Drives in PCs being scrapped, so why not re-cycle and do your bit for the environment?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great price, great product. 8 Jun 2010
This is the first time I have managed to retrieve the data from an old hard drive. This device made it so very, very simple.

I just took the drive out of the old computer, plugged it into this and screwed in about 8 screws, turned it on and hey presto, there were all my old files.

A bargain at the price too. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great and cheap! 12 Feb 2010
Great little thing, for next to nothing. Meant I had an extra 80GB from an old drive I would otherwise have destroyed.
Simple to set up - my 7 year old did most of it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked like a dream! 11 Feb 2010
This turned out to be the best 15 we've spent in a long time and is the first time I've been sufficiently impressed with a product to write a review.

We had been using a Lacie external hard drive to back up our photos and other important data for the last five years or so, until last week when XP refused to recognise the drive when it was plugged in. We tried every piece of advice we could find on the net and eventually came to the conclusion that the disc was probably knackered. The only thing that went against this was that the disc seemed to spin up smoothly with no signs of the horrible noises that go with a failed drive. I therefore decided to give this enclosure a go and ordered one from an Amazon Marketseller.

Installation was incredibly simple even for an IT luddite like me who only just knows one end of a screwdriver from the other (which incidentally is also included in the kit). Upon plugging into our laptop the drive was immediately recognised and we had full access to our files. The enclosure appears to be of good quality and looks extremely smart and professional. We have tried it on our other laptop which is using Vista home basic and it works fine.

All in all we are well chuffed and would recommend this to anyone with similar problems to ours.

It seems to work fine but is a very noisy unit. As a cheap way to pull off my old files from the hard drive it was great.

Bought it to use as a means to read two old drives I had found from my older computers.
