This is a delightful collection spanning the personal and artistic connection Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg made from her first recordings in 1968 to the mid 1990's (even though their marriage broke up some way through). Gainsbourg had collaborated with others, notably Brigitte Bardot and originally wanted her to record Je t'aime... moi non plus with him. She did so but was reluctant to have it released apparently out of deference to her then husband millionaire playboy Gunter Sachs, though their marriage appeared already to be on the rocks. Enter Serge's new squeeze Jane B who evidently had no qualms. They were passionately in love and the rest is pop music history, with a certain notoriety attached. Apparently Jane's heavy breathing was too much for straight-laced BBC at the time and they banned Je t'aime (they even banned the skit recording made by Frankie Howerd with, of all people, June Whitfield!). Today it all seems harmless of course. Jane was to go on to act as muse to Serge, so this collection has so much more besides. All songs here are by him and, though possibly I feel that Jane is a better actress than singer, one can see why the success of her recording career owed so much to him. The French in particular seem to vacillate from being mesmerised by 'power-house Piafs' to adoring a fragile-sounding voice (Claudine Longet, once married to Andy Williams, also made an impression in the 'States before a Trial rocked her career, retiring soon after) and Jane had that in spades (maybe too self-consciously?). She is the best French-speaking British-born person I have heard so small wonder she did so well in the continent (to the extent that some British find her too 'French' and neither can they 'stand' her as a personality).Read more ›
