I've had this for a week and I'm completely delighted and, indeed, captivated by it.
It's a small rechargeable robot vacuum cleaner and will allow you to clean the flat areas of your house without (much) intervention.
It works best with large empty rooms with light carpets and furniture.
It takes between 30 and 60 minutes to clean a room using a semi-random walk and will return to its docking station when it's finished. It will follow walls and often does a circuit of table and chair legs. Mine's never got stuck (yet) but can sometimes get behind or under something and can then take a while to extract itself. This is actually a good thing as it's cleaning all the time and so actually does the "hard to reach" places more thoroughly than the vast expanse of carpet in the middle of the room. It nudges light-coloured walls and furniture to make sure is gets as close to them as possible, but will crash into dark objects at full speed. I've not noted any damage (it has a smooth spring-loaded bumper) but it sometimes sounds as if it's having a fit. It detects stairs and will stop and back away. It will also untangle itself from cables but can pull light objects from tables. Lamps seem to be okay, but I've had cordless phones' docking stations pulled from tables.
It is programmable, with each day being able to be set for a different time.
Mine lives in the bedroom, and vacuums every day at 10am when I'm at work. By the time I come home it's back in its docking station and fully recharged. I then put it in another room (without its docking station - it has easily enough charge to do a room), and finally take it back to its docking station in the bedroom at night....
Thus each week the bedroom is cleaned 7 times and each other room once.
You will still need a "normal" vacuum cleaner for stairs, the tops of skirting boards and behind anywhere the Roomba cannot reach.
It is best to clean the Roomba after every use. This is simple - the dust box needs emptying (it WILL be full) and the rollers need de-grotting. The Roomba is designed for ease - the removable parts pop out with no fuss. You'll have cleaned it in 60 seconds and it's not a dirty job - assuming it has just been picking up dust.
It's not as powerful as a normal vacuum cleaner but by taking up to an hour to clean a room it is very thorough. I'd say it does more in the hour than I'd do in 15 minutes with a Dyson. And, of course, I'm not actually having to do any of the work in that hour. When you first get it you will just stand and watch it with an inane grin on your face. I'm hoping the effect will wear off - I've spent longer watching it that I would have done hoovering myself.
This is a spectacular, if pricey, piece of kit and is certainly not a toy. My house is now cleaned more often and more thoroughly that I'd ever be able to do myself. And it's effortless. I don't believe that this is a gadget I'll tire of - it really works and does what I want it to.
But if you have a small, cramped, cluttered house, with dark carpets then you may struggle to get maximum benefit.
I was more than a little sceptical that this would actually work, but I read the reviews on sites like these and decided to give it a try.
Summary: - Well worth it. Starts off from the docking station when I am at work 2 times a week, picks up all of the dust in the 3 rooms that I get it to clean, I just need to empty it after every clean (apparently) - It does not clean my dark rug in the middle of the floor (it thinks that it is a set of stairs apparently) - I keep it out of my bedroom (using the little lighthouse supplied) because I have a rug about 3/4 inch in height - it runs over the edges and actually pulls out many of the little hairs along the edges when the 2 main wheels straddle the edge - It does seem like the unit is drunk, because it seems to jet around randomly HOWEVER it really does work!!
Would I recommend it - certainly!! The place has become dust free after just a few runs, and it will stay that way.
It is true something about the Roomba makes you want to name it AND give it your surname, but no seriously it may stem from the simple fact that it is a tiny brilliant piece of equipment and I cannot find fault with it.
I was led to believe that the larger traditional vacuum cleaner will have to be used at least once a week, it's been over a month and with three children in the house, we still haven't felt the need to use the old vacuum cleaner.
I've had this product for six weeks now and am delighted with it. It picks up far more dust and grot than my expensive 'normal' vacuum cleaner, and all on its own. I just hit the 'clean' button and empty the bin/clean the brushes on a regular basis (takes about a minute, so not exactly onerous).
According to my electricity monitor, recharging costs less than 1p and the unit then operates efficiently for 90 minutes - a pretty nifty saving over an ordinary vacuum cleaner, especially if you need to clean regularly.
Can't recommend highly enough. Buy one.
Downside? Not quite the timesaver it could be: everyone sits and watches, fascinated by its antics!
I bought one of these based on reviews and whilst i was skeptical i was quite excited by the prospect of something to help me with the house work.
The first few days I must say i was disappointed. It didn't do a very thorough clean and felt I'd wasted my money.
However, I've now had it for about a month and slowly slowly it has become my "cleaning companion". If you think of the old roller carpet cleaners that surface cleaned carpets and swept hard floors, I would say Roomba does a similar quality clean. However, realising it does it itself and you don't have to lift a finger it's actually great. I now set it to come on while I'm out to clean a couple of rooms and when I come back it's much better than when I left. I also realise that if you watch it work you see everything it misses, but if you leave the room and come back later the room is clean, so it does cover most of the room. Just don't watch it, it will drive you crazy.
Something it does which my vacuum cleaner can't is clean under the beds, it's also quite good with cat fur and hair.
You still need to use a normal vacuum cleaner to get a deeper clean BUT Roomba makes the house nice in between. It's definitely reduced my stress of housework and being a working mum time is something I don't have much of.
Would I recommend it? Yes, definitely, but don't expect it to replace your vacuum cleaner.
