Manufacturer's Description

The hotly anticipated SPINN by iriver redefines the portable media player-again. The SPINN has an innovative mechanical wheel which rotates 360 degrees, discreetly clicking as it turns, and allows you to move between menu selections with the greatest of ease, and then you push down on the wheel to make your selection. But it doesn't stop there-the stunningly crisp 480 x 272-pixel AMOLED screen is also touch-sensitive allowing you multiple methods of navigation.

It's so intuitive that even the least technically able will pick up the player and start using straight away.

The AMOLED screen is a new technology, which does away with the usual backlight of an LCD display. With AMOLED, the pixels themselves emit light, as opposed to LCD which has a colour mask over a backlight. What this means is incredible brightness with a huge viewing angle. The screen on the SPINN measures 3.3 inches and displays 480 X 272 pixels making it pin-sharp as well.

Aside from the standard MP3, the SPINN will also play a variety of other audio files, has full speed 30fps video, will let you view your photographs and also has an FM radio. And then there are still a host of other options, like Bluetooth, Flash, SWF games capable, PDF support, and an alarm clock-which are all packed into the well-built silver aluminium chassis.

MUSIC - provides abundant base and three-dimensional sound through 3D stereo effects, supporting SRS WOW HD, and advanced 3D sound technology.

Flash Contents - supports Flash Lite2.1 and allows you to enjoy a collection of contents like SWF flash games and other contents made and shared by users on the iriver web site.

FM radio & recorder - The record timer allows you to enjoy your favorite radio program at any time.

Multimedia Album - The 3.3 inch bright QVGA AMOLED screen provides clear and fresh quality for the pictures you have saved-which can also be shown in a slide show or music album.

Text Viewer - features good read-ability thanks to the true-type font-the pivot function makes it possible to read the text in the direction you want and to scroll automatically .

Video - QVGA (480 x 272) resolution supports MPEG-4 SP and WMV9 SP of 30 FPS and allows you to convert various files such as movies, music videos and animations using iriverplus3.

Various EQ and Codec support - 7 EQ and SRS WOW HD so you can enjoy your music in a variety of files including OGG Codec.

iriverplus3 & Album Art - Search music information (ID3 Tag) and extract music from CDs through Gracenote, you can even set the radio tuner as well as manage and transmit files.

SPINN Wheel - exclusive to iriver and something you cannot experience with other products.

Simple Design - features an exquisite appearance that is well balanced and incorporates a minimum of buttons and menus.

Aluminium Chassis - the modern silver look is sophisticated and urban and it makes the player durable while the detailed design make the SPINN brilliant.

Product Description

iRiver Spinn It's not often that manufacturers move away from the tried and tested. They can't be blamed for that - if it works why change it? Well gladly iRiver are not a manufacturer that applies this sort of logic - as you'll see with their brand new Spinn. Spinn - a new concept What makes the Spinn such a different player? First off it's easier to say what it's not. It's not a gimmick that has one outstanding feature and disappointing specs under the hood. What iRiver have done is take the best player they can physically make with today's technology and then apply a revolutionary operating system that makes everything else seem clumsy. Touch screen is a major talking point in today's market but very few players do it well. No matter how well it is implemented you will always lose a tactile interaction with the setting or menu function. Well with the Spinn this isn't an issue. It uses a large touch screen but adds a unique analogue spin dial on the edge of the player to move through menus. Combining the best of both with the simplicity that's made iRiver products so great in recent years. Technology Component wise it's easy to produce a player with a gimmick and rely on that gimmick to make it sell. It's far more difficult to produce something genuinely class leading with top-notch custom technology and then package it in such a way that it's attractive to the gadget freak and the fashion conscious market at the same time. The Spinn without a doubt comfortably straddles those markets. Screen The first thing you'll notice about the stunningly slim Spinn is the huge 3.3 screen it packs into such a pocketable player. This is fully touch screen and accordingly robust resolution is a class-leading 480 X 272 (WQVGA). Perhaps the most stunning thing about it however is the ground-breaking AMOLED screen. This is the largest AMOLED screen to be fitted to a portable player and it's simply eye-poppin

A must buy. period. 17 Oct 2009
I bought this player because I was amazed at the design. I still don't understand why people are not confident to comment on this product. I would reccommend this player to anyone. Its your average player, with a ton of functions that quite a lot of today's players cant beat.

Design: 9/10
The spinn looks a quite well sized in pictures but the player can actually fit within the average person's palm. The edges are not like the apple products and are pretty sharp. The cover to reveal the usb port is difficult to open. The case itself is magnificent. I remember touching my Vaio's magnesium alloy casing and the spinn feels just like that. It feels extremly durable. The player is surprisingly light too and slim(it dosent look so in pictures).

Functionality and features: 8/10
The spinn has everything you'd want. The video is the most spectacular video playback I have ever seen in my life. The AMOLED screen is absolutely stunning. The display is immensely crisp and very little detail is missed. Even though it dosent say, the player can play .3gp, xvid, divx and lots of other files(because they are variants of mpeg4). The audio is excellent too. Even considering the walkman with the much touted bass implementions, I don't think the walkmans stand up to the spinn's SRS WOW 3D HD audio decoder found in mostly home theater systems! You can customize further within the SRS WOW by altering the trubass, focus, definition, and wow. With a firmware, upgrade, you can turn you spinn into a notebook too. The wallpaper can be changed, the display orentiation, and menu style too. I downloaded some really professional themes available on the main site. One other thing I noticed was that despite the suspiciously outmissed 7.5gb of storage space, the flash memory is suprisingly stunning. It took 40 seconds to transfer a 1.36gb movie! I also transfered a lot of flash games onto the thing which work great, you just use your touch screen as a mouse pointer. Houever, it was sad to see the lack of an expansion slot and built in wi-fi. There is bluetooth but I doubt I'm gonna use it too much.

Reliability: 9/10
I doubt, despite the reset button it has at the back, that it will ever crash. I transfered a HD video and the video actually player and well...stuttered....but still(it was 1080p). Even if the player is stuck badly on a video, the exit button will instantly work. Videos upto the 640x480 resolution work without any problems(higher resolutions work but problems start to appear). The battery is great too! I have no idea what maH the lithium ion battery is but I dont have the heart to take my new player apart(i bought it a long time ago and it has some sentimental value to it) and I dont think it matters because the battery is 100% reliable. On one circumstance, the player was fully charged in 1 hour, and I played music and videos daily with it for about 5 days and with no further charge! The player also has a digital clock and you can also set the date, however I dont see where you can actually see the date after you set it. The touchscreen is a bit irresponsive at times and will require one or 2 nail prods to press a button. The click wheel however, works for most functions and is an absolute pleasure to use! File transfer can be done through windows explorer or with the iriver media center provided software. The disc included also contains a video converter which does not work very well and a firmware upgdater which works great. Video converter is going to be a problem for average consumers as the player is very picky in terms of the codec used. I used the xvid profile with any video converter. The spin can be used either horizontally or vertically like a candybar phone by changinh the display orientation.

Overall: A* Grade Player
Really great player, the only missing features would be expansion slot, wifi, noise cancellation and a pdf viewer. The player is also a little short on memory(7.5gb- 500mb is suspiciously a lot to miss out after formatting). But if you want one hell of a music player without all the fancy junk and you want it in style, then this is a defninte buy. It's a bit sad that Iriver have a weak marketing department because I think it is the only company that can beat Apple at their own game. I would reccommend this underrated player to anyone.

Thoroughly recommend this product, just on the sound quality alone, but it's a really nicely designed product as well. I didn't try the headphones it came with so I can't comment on that, but through a decent set of buds the sound is really excellent, and notably better than Ipod. The software isn't worth using, but you can just drag and drop like a normal hard drive which is fine. 8gb isn't quite enough, else I would have given it 5 stars.

I have recently purchaced the iRiver SPINN 8GB and I am very pleased with the audio quality which is excellent. However, the software is poor. The SPINN does not recognise any files which you drag n drop though 'My Music' nor will it upload through Windows Media Player. You are left having to use the package software which offers very basic tools and operation.
