The iRig is a revolutionary product that allows you to connect your guitar/bass to your iOS device. From there, your signal travels through the wonderful world of AmpliTube iOS software to give your guitar sound life and meaning. To use the iRig, you simply plug the 3.5mm TRRS end into the headphone jack of your iOS device. Then plug your guitar into the 1/4" jack using a standard guitar cable. To monitor your sound, plug your headphones/line out into the 3.5 mm headphone jack on the iRig. That's all there is to it. Now you're ready to Jam.

iRig stomp setup

You'll have at your fingertips the sound and control up to 4 recombinable simultaneous stompbox effects + amplifier + cabinet + microphone just like a traditional guitar or bass stage rig. Plus, you get all kinds of cool extras like a riff learner, music player and recording studio.

iRig - Plug in and play simplicity

The new iRig interface adapter is the easiest way to get your instrument's signal into iPhone/iPod touch/iPad. It features a standard 1/4" instrument jack, a standard 1/8" (3.5mm) headphone out jack, and the iOS standard 1/8" TRRS jack for input on your iOS device. All you have to do is make your connections, then launch AmpliTube iOS or your favorite guitar/recording app and you're ready to go. The iRig is the ideal companion not only to the mobile AmpliTube series of apps, but also works with any other recording, processing or tuning app. Plus, you can also use the iRig with line level signal sources such as synthesizers, keyboards or mixers.

Now for the hidden features… if you have a newer Mac computer, you can use the iRig as an audio interface for it. The newer Mac models feature a headphone jack that acts as a headphone/microphone input for headsets. This means that you can also use your iRig with your Mac laptop or desktop machine to take advantage of the higher processing power of your machine and you don't need an additional audio interface to use it. Simply plug the iRig into your headphone jack, plug your headphones/line out into your iRig and you've got a fully functioning audio interface for guitar/bass/keyboards, or any other instrument with a 1/4" out. Pretty cool.

AmpliTube, AmpliTube Fender and AmpliTube Slash for iOS

Click on a stompbox module slot and you can add a stompbox effect to your signal chain. There's a small navigation list of available effects directly under the navigation bar. Simply click on an effect name to load it into the slot. Swipe left and right to access all the available stompbox effects in your app. The signal flows from left to right and you can reposition effects in the chain to experiment with different textures and sounds. You get three stompbox slots daisy-chained together to add your favorite effects. You can turn on/off individual stompboxes simply by clicking the pedal button.

Play

Now for the good stuff. Download the AmpliTube FREE, AmpliTube Fender FREE or AmpliTube Slash app from the iTunes App store. Plug in your guitar and headphones via the iRig and launch the app. Immediately you'll see something very familiar - a complete rig. AmpliTube iOS recreates your entire guitar/bass signal chain in your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad. At the top of the screen, you'll see the navigation bar for your rig. This is where you select the module to modify.

Next up is the Amp section with cabinet and microphone. Simply click that slot, and you can choose with ease different amplifiers from your collection. Changing a speaker cabinet is as simple as touching it on the screen, same goes for the microphone. Tap once to change to the next speaker configuration in the list and demo the sound. Easy, huh? (You can also bypass the Amp module by clicking 'Bypass'). You can now use your iOS device for live play or practice without the need for other effects boxes, amps or modelers.

Practice

We've built some pretty cool practice tools into AmpliTube iOS. These tools allow you to:

  • Play along with your favorite music from your device library
  • Isolate sections of pre-recorded material and loop them for continuous play
  • Slow down sections to learn difficult passages
  • 'No Voice' button cancels the center of the mix (where vocals and leads are typically placed) allowing you to sing or play along with the original material.
Record your performances

Record

AmpliTube FREE, AmpliTube Fender FREE and AMpliTube Slash come with a built-in single track recorder, expandable to 4 tracks. Immediately you can record your performance, length limited only by your device memory. When you expand the recorded to 4-track recorder with Master Effects (via in-app purchase), you'll have a complete mobile recording solution built right into your device. Create full songs and compositions right on your iOS device, and export them in WAV or MP3 formats to share.

The recorder features our re-amping function which allows you to record a riff, then go back and apply a different tone setup to get a completely different sound without having to re-record it. Once you're happy with the sound, click the 'apply' button and move to the next track.

The Master Effects section allows you to do a few things, mainly fine-tune your finished recording with EQ and Compression, but also allows you to add ambience and depth to your recordings with a master send reverb feature. Each channel has a reverb send slider that allows you to send part or all of the signal to a fully adjustable master reverb section. This gives each track it's own space to occupy in the mix and adds a tremendous amount of life and depth to your song.

Vocalize with VocaLive

We've also added some killer vocal effects to AmpliTube via the in-app purchase feature. These effects come straight from our popular VocaLive app for singers and vocalists and feature a 3-part harmonizer (Choir), Morph (vocal manipulator), Pitch Fix (pitch correction), Doubler and a De-Esser. Use the iRig Mic handheld microphone, the iRig PRE microphone preamp (allows you to use any XLR mic with your iOS device), or your built-in device mic to add vocals and sound effects to your composition.

Expand

We're adding new models of gear to mix on a regular basis. The in-app purchase feature allows you to expand your AmpliTube app when you want to. You can start with the AmpliTube FREE, AmpliTube Fender FREE or AmpliTube Slash app, then add to your collection of gear when you want.

Not a bad piece of kit, but does have quite a lot of background hiss when you're not actually hitting the strings.
The noise gate can be put in line, but it kills all the top end & sound all gets a bit muffled.

Still, it's a good gadge even if a bit overpriced for what amounts to an adapter cable.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A great little gadget ! 24 Jun 2011
I was originally searching on amazon for a chromatic tuner for my bass guitar and the results were coming up between £50 - £60 for a tuner. Then my band mate recommended the irig as the software has a free tuner built in which is surprisingly accurate so for £25 i didnt have much to lose.

I am currently using the irig with my ipad and i must admit the results are outstanding. The software on the app store has a free version aswell as a paid version but you can mix and match what effects you want to buy as well as buying different makes of amp too.

The software also has a built in recorder, metronome and an option to import songs from your itunes so you can play along with them as you learn them.

This would be every musicians dream if it had an option to plug it into an actual amp without damaging the speaker or getting a ridiculous amount of feedback. You can however plug it into a small set of cd speakers or just have it with a pair of headphones which will keep the neighbours and your family happy.

All in all, this product is great for the money and the software is very cheap but packed full of features which you could literally spend thousands on in real life so for £25 you really cant go wrong.

A great little practice amp built into your apple device which is great for practicing and it wont break the bank either.

    4.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic practice tool 15 Dec 2010
I've had my iRig and the Amplitube app (full version) for about 10 days now, and the combination has quickly become an essential part of my daily practice regime. If this technology existed when I was starting out some 30 years ago, I would be a better guitarist today.

I use my iRig/Amplitube setup with an iPod Touch (2010 model), and had absolutely no problems installing or running it. In fact, it's extremely intuitive and you're playing in no time.

The iRig feels solid (time will tell) and is easy to throw in the guitar case without taking up much space. Together with the software, it produces sounds that are amazingly close to the amps and effects being modeled. I wouldn't necessarily trust it live, but for practice purposes this is fantastic.

Where the iRig/Amplitube app really shines is for practice and sketching song ideas. The ability to import any song from your iTunes library, adjust the tempo (while keeping the pitch) and play along is brilliant. I've done this with a computer, but the amount of gear involved (laptop, interface, etc.) is more cumbersome and less mobile. And the four-track recorder plus mixer makes recording ideas on the fly a breeze. Doing these things used to involve lots of equipment (mics, mic stands, pre-amps, four-track recorders, mixing boards, etc.). Having everything available along with multiple amps and effects on an iPod/iPhone with a small connector is -- for me -- a true paradigm shift.

The one downside of the Amplitube app on an iPhone/iPod is that the screen size means some of the buttons (e.g. for selecting an effects pedal) are quite small. It's easy to tap the wrong button. For this, I give it four stars instead of five. (I imagine that the iPad version is great in this respect.

5.0 out of 5 stars So pleased with this! 18 Oct 2010
    By Jonesey
I received my i-Rig on Friday and have just spent an entire weekend playing through it.

Installation was easy, just plug your guitar in one end, put the other end into your iPhone (still saving up for an iPad) and stick some headphones in and it works, that's it! (and no batteries required) I've got the Mac version of the amplitube software so I knew what to expect in the App. It is surprisingly good sound quality and there isn't the slightest touch of any signal delay (latnecy) when you play.
I'd already download the free App a few weeks back but once I started using it with the irig I grabbed the full one. The presets they supplied are pretty good and cover most areas that you'd want, but I've overwritten them all with my own ones now.

I'm going to get a stereo cable to so I can connect it direct to my guitar amp (Marshall DFX30 combo) and stop having to drag around all my pedals.

All in all very pleased with it. What they really need to do now is add some kind of recording facility. Then it will do virtually everything I need!

    regards

    Barry (Dr Strummer)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product! 4 May 2011
What a great product! A simple idea to plug your guitar into your iPhone or iPad. I bougt this as a cheap alternative to the apogee jamm to plug my guitar into my iPad for GarageBand. It uses the standard internal audio analogue to digital conversion by plugging into the headset socket. It also has a headphone out port to listen back or plug into an amp or stereo. It gives a pretty decent sound although latency for live performance is frustrating so not recommended. All in all a great piece of kit to get a decent demo down on your iPad!
