5.0 out of 5 stars Ipod Nano, 8 July 2010
By Luke Thrower - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
These days everyone want's one peice of equipment to do everything, the 3rd gen Ipod Nano is here to take care of those who want the bare essentials , and wants them done well with the usual proffesionalism and slickness of the Apple products.

The Ipod Nano comes minimal peice of plastic packaging which is seethrough, with the inside product cover with white paper. The outside of the box has Ipod Nano on the sides and 4gb on the top.
Inside the box , the wrapping states " Designed by Apple in California ", nice to know, not sure about the product miles though. This peice of paper holds all the contents inside so sliding this out , the outer paper has 4gb on the top again and the back has all the contents and requirements.
Inside the paper is the Ipod Nano held by a peice of plastic material . but more on that later. There's also a feature pamphlet in two langauges, English and Spanish. A product information guide, and finally two Apple logo stickers. Also contained is the headphones wrapped in plastic and the Ipods dock connector, as well as a USB cable for use with itunes.
The connector is white and will fit any Ipod dock, Its basically here to let the Ipod sit more comfortably.
The USB cable is 30 cm long and has a classic USB plug at one end and a wide plug at the end for the Ipod.

Taking the Ipod out of its plastic holding is done by bending the plastic and pushing the Ipod out, this is a little bit difficult and feels as though you might damage the Ipod , dont worry these things are really ressiliant.

The first thing about holding the Ipod in your hand is it's incredibly light, only a couple grams and almost unoticable in your pocket. Not only that but it fits into the palm of your hand comfortably , as it's only a few cm in height and width, with depth being a mm.

Looking at the Ipod , the front of mine is silver (Although a range of colours are available) with a white click wheel and a colour screen, only about 3cm tall and 5cm wide.
The bottom has a hold button , the USB port and the headphone jack.
On the back It's a silver, mirror type look. This has the Apple logo and ipod name, size and information. My main issue with this backing is that it scratches like a knife in butter, it's also a fingerprint magnet and loves dirt. I have to say that it would be a major improvement to the Ipod if all had the backing of the Iphone which doesn't damage as much.

Starting up the Ipod I was surprised that it had a full charge, wether this was just mine or a regular occurence I dont know, but I thought this was brilliant on there part. You are prompted to select a language and then away you go.
Setting it up on my laptop was very easy, I plugged it in and it opened up Itunes right away and let me start syncing my music, this was completed quite quickly and so I was ready to use my Ipod within 30 minutes of opening.

On to the features , Music player, videos, photos, extras, clocks, games and settings.
The Music player is obviously the main feature, it splits up the music in numerous ways like, artist , album, songs etc, as well as a search function. Selecting a song is easy once your used to the click wheel, with turning it allowing you to up the volume or decrease.
As you scroll through the music the album art is on a slideshow at the side , this gives the player a nice feel and also allows for a bit of personalisation.
Of course Cover flow can also be used , where you select the albums from their image , like flicking through your cd collection at home. This runs really smoothly and its nice to be able to choose your music this way. Selecting one brings up it's tracklist with name and length, and its just like looking at the back of the album.
Once you have chosen a song, the album image sits on the left and all the tracks information on the right , along the bottom is a blue bar showing how much of the song has played. Pressing the center of the click wheel means you can skip to a certain section, or another press will let you rate it out of 5.
The music retains it's quality and the sound is quite good for a small player, obviously the speakers your using have an effect, but with the Apple ones provided the music is pleasing to the ears, acoustics and drums all feel pronounced , and theres a built in EQ in settings to let you change the way the speakers work for certain music types.
It also doesn't have to be music, it can be podcasts and audiobooks too which are all available on Itunes.

The Ipod also plays videos, the screen is quite small but it is watchable, maybe for the odd home video or clip but I couldn't see myself watching a full length film on it without it straining my eyes. The colours are ok again for a small player, but the videos wont come through with bright colours although it runs extremely smooth. Watching videos of course also eats up the battery life a lot quicker than music.

Photos come through in good qaulity although the small screen makes it difficult to pick up small details.

The extras are clocks, calendars, contacts , alarms, games , storage for notes , A 4 number lock and a stopwatch. These can all come in handy and are things you dont usually find in such quality in other players of this size, However due to the lack of speakers, the alarm wont be heard without headphones or placed in a external dock.
If your intrested the 3 games are Ipod quiz, Klondike and Vortex. These games are quite fun and Vortex is definatley my firm favorite. It's a 360 brickbreaker game , used by controlling the paddle with the click wheel , this can be frustrating to begin with but once your used to it it's great fun.
New games are also available to buy with Itunes from the ipod store.

In settings you can find an important run-down of what your Ipods carrying, as well as sound checks , EQ, date and time , Reset and legal.

The control system was very innovative at the time, it takes getting used but once you know how its wonderful to use and now only surpaseed by the touch screen of the Itouch. Its layout is very simple as Menu always takes you one step back, the left and right buttons let you skip through tracks and the play button lets you pause and play. The center button takes care of selecting and is slightly indented to let your thumb rest.
One complaint I have is that this can get dirty due to the material, but as I had a case over it this wasn't much of a problem.

good price considering it's qaulity , durability and style. Having had this for around 3 years now , it's still in as working condition as it was the day I bought it.
It has since been passed on to my Mum who is a bit of a technophobe, but she nows finds it simple to use and loves listening to music on the go.

This may not be one for the really serious music lovers, or ones who want top video and applications. But for a basic mp3 with the style of an Ipod, you cant really go wrong with this one !
