5.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to the iPhone for Seniors 4 Dec 2013
By Clive
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a large paperback book all about the iPhone. I am an over 65 year old, who has recently taken the plunge and bought a smart phone - the iPhone 5s. The author is an American lady, so in a few places the book does seem slightly American with, for example, prices being given in U.S.$. It is printed in large clear print and is easy to understand. I highly recommend this book if you are a senior and have an iPhone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some Good Features, but also Some Things Missing 6 Jan 2014
By Joel V. Kamer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm a first-time owner of a smart phone, and I wasn't too conversant with a basic cell phone previous to this. Consequently, there were some things I looked for this book to address, and I was disappointed not to find them. For example, setting your own ring tone instead of just using the default ring tone. Also, personalizing your own voice mail message instead of just using the default. I was able to figure out how to do these things because of the user-friendliness of Apple products, but I'd expect a book for seniors to address these basic questions instead of completely omitting them. Another disappointment was that I kept getting two pictures whenever I used the phone camera. I couldn't understand why until I searched through the default phone settings and found that you have an option to save the "normally exposed photo" in addition to the "high dynamic range" photo the phone automatically produces. No mention of this at all in the book. Another quibble is that when I open text messages sent to me, the time shown is when I opened them, rather than when they were sent. I have no idea if this can be adjusted as the book doesn't address it. One last thing is nomenclature --- the book refers to the Utilities folder on the iPhone, whereas my iPhone 5c calls it "Extras."

Otherwise, the book is thorough and well-illustrated. It very often has a picture of the display you will see on your iPhone when it gives you instructions on a feature. Also, it seems to have covered all of the features of the phone so you can become proficient at whatever interests you.

Finally, as this book is for seniors, should you really devote an entire chapter (though small) to reading books on your phone? I'll use my iPad or Kindle for that!

1.0 out of 5 stars This is not a book for Seniors or Dummies 3 Jan 2014
By bookworm - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The book is very confusing and very unhelpful. The tutorials are difficult to follow and the instructions often do not produce the intended results. I wound up buying an ITune that I did not want. While I may be old, I am not too dumb to be able to follow instructions. There are other books on this subject and I wish I had better infomation to choose a differnt one.
The author and publisher did a terrible job in releasing this book. If there were a way to return it to the publisher, I would do so immediately.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful. 25 Nov 2013

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Comprehensive. Perhaps to in-depth for the average senior. A good book for someone already comfortable with a smartphone. Recommended but needs simplifying in some areas.

It is comprehensive, covering even the most basic of concepts, and has proved to be extremely helpful for a 'non'techie' like me.
