Historically Apple always took a heuristic approach to the use of their devices - meaning they think people learn how to operate Apple devices best by just using and exploring them, that's why they rarely include an instruction manual in the box and this approach works well providing you're not afraid to pick up the device and try things out. You'll quickly learn the basics and, because Apple's operating systems are usually quite logical, the techniques you learn in one area can usually be applied in another. Of course this is easy for me to say because I've been doing things the Apple way for over 20 years and it's mostly become instinctive for me - but I've certainly noticed other people struggle with it, especially my older relatives who are often afraid that one wrong click or swipe will delete everything and instantly render the whole device useless. This book tries to calm those qualms by taking a much more traditional approach, walking you step by step through the various capabilities of your new iPad, explaining what it can do and how to do it.

The book starts even before you get your iPad, helping choose the right model for your needs by explaining the differences between them. It then takes you through Apple's set-up procedure, which happens automatically the first time you switch on your iPad - if you buy your iPad in one of Apple's Stores they will take you through this process before you leave the store but if you buy your iPad online or received it as a gift it's useful to have this book beside you as a reference. It also explains where you can go to check or change any setting later, if you make a mistake or didn't have the relevant information to hand.

I bought this book after careful research of whats available. I got my iPad3 the previous week and quickly realised there is a lot more to this than meets the eye and its so different to a PC. The book helps you to choose a iPad and then outlines what it is what it does and how its set up. It then goes on to explain its myriad of functions camera, photo storage web use, apps., how to buy music, store it etc I am glad i bought it as to drift around the iPad without any structured training would not be at all sensible. This is a training manual set out in plain English and good for all age groups. I also like the quiz at each section, this is to test if you got it and i found I couldnt answer all the questions so reverted and read the text again.

GREAT BOOK BUY ONE but I reckon the paperback version is better than kindle version

This book forms part of a series from Wiley aimed at the over-50s; it is branded by the U3A (University of the Third Age), who provide adult education services to the retired. I have to say that I think this kind of badging is a mistake and in quite poor taste; you can hardly imagine a series of technology books specifically aimed at women, for example, but it seems to be fine to reinforce an ageist stereotype. Maybe the target market find it reassuring, but to me it does come across as rather patronising.

With that out of the way, what's the book like? Well, I have to say that it's a decent enough beginner's guide to the iPad - it assumes very little prior knowledge, and starts from deciding which version of the iPad to buy, through initial connections, use of the keyboard and camera, on to web and email and multimedia usage. There isn't much of the out-of-the-box functionality which isn't covered, and the explanations of how to use it are clear and well-written. There are plenty of photos and screenshots to help explain, and the writing style is conversational and avoids excessive use of jargon and buzzwords.

So as a guide aimed at a newcomer to the iPad, it's actually pretty good, and I'd recommend it - but it would have been even better had it been marketed as a beginner's guide to the iPad with no mention of the age of the reader.

These U3A (University of the third age) books are brilliant. All written in a language that us oldies understand.

From the very first page this book is both easy to follow and a pleasure to read. It explains how to set up and start using your iPad or iPad mini straight away with little waffle and plenty of simple explanations.

The book itself covers just about everything you would need to get the most from your iPad and the way it works. Each chapter tells you about a particular subject, such as managing the address book, playing music, connecting to wifi, taking photographs and browsing the web (to name but a few) and at the end of each chapter, gives you a summary of what you have just read and then, questions you on what you have learned. A simple yet powerful idea that really helps, indeed I must admit I really enjoyed discovering how much I had learned from each chapter. One extremely useful application is to be able to set up Birthday reminders as well as all other appointments, very useful indeed.

I love my iPad, even more so after reading this lovely book.

Great book, the best one I have bought. Easy to understand. Better than the big ones you get in W.H.Smiths.
