5.0 out of 5 stars A bit older and wiser.... 18 July 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Recently retired I was fed up with waiting my turn to use the home computer and bought the iPad 3 mainly for email etc. purposes. But I was surprised and quite overwhelmed with the applications the device can be used for so purchased this book, the title caught my eye.... I have been really pleased with it.
It is written in a clear and concise manner without the technical jargon and has answered all of my "beginners" queries. I have impressed the "younger and not-as-wise as they thought" members of my family with my mastering of this device, mainly due to this excellent step-by-step manual. The summaries and quizzes are particularly useful in helping me remember.
I am still learning and keep this book by my side at all times!

5.0 out of 5 stars iPad book review 30 July 2012
By Stueeh Warburton VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
What better way of reviewing the excellent "iPAd for the Older and Wiser" than using my new iPAd 2! I decided not to spend the extra money on the new iPad 3, based on trying my kids' 2 models. I logged in OK and then used the book to see if it was user-friendly. It 's aimed at the U3A group but I think it is excellent for anyone with any of the 3 generations of iPads who want to get up and running. It ticks my basic boxes - regardless of which book I read. Namely in that it is well laid out, the font is clear and there are a lot of helpful screen shot photos. Also it has boxes with tips and warnings as you go through. I have used MS VIsta and other software for years - but decided to give the book a go to help me get up to speed
I had the iBook version but wanted a hard copy book and this worked perfectly.
With it I set up a password, learnt how to conserve battery life, add my own wallpaper screen saver, how to link to iCloud, to use spell checker - which I am using for this review. To ensure I cycle my battery once a month, how to use the notes screen and make good use of all keyboard options, begin my contacts list, with birthdays etc. how to use emails better than I was doing. I looked at video calling - but will try it out later on -FaceTime .How to do instant messaging and to both web browse and bookmark favourites -it is fast! It has a good section on iTunes which I have used already on my laptop - but how to link the iPad to it. Also using utube and taking photos - which I have done. The maps app is superb I had pins dropping all over the place - such fun! I downloaded a few iBook options - many are free. I also paid for the numbers app to help me use it instead of excel.
So overall? An excellent book which has given me confidence to explore more! So whether you are 20 or 60 this book is well worth a look

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Set Out , Easy To Follow 13 Aug 2012
By D. Pass VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
A good sized book that has an easy to follow index, good illustrations , brain training sections at the end of a chapter to see if you have taken in what you have read which is a good idea.
The icons throughout the book are a lightbulb which is a tip and suggestion to make life easier, a pencil to take notes to avoid confusion, yellow triangle which is a warning to read carefully as things could go wrong, a pointing hand to give it a try , trivia to add a bit of fun, all together this is a very good book and even though I have had my i pad 3 for three and a half months I still had things to learn from this book .

5.0 out of 5 stars Suitable for all Ages! 1 Aug 2012
By Duncurin VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Excellent book, which I believe is really meant for 'old people' and by those, of course, we mean anyone older than ourselves: but, in truth, it's an excellent read for us all, and though I didn't need it to tell me the definition of 'Apps' or of 'Data' it's still an interesting fact-filled, well-presented read, which taught me many things I didn't know.

I must confess that, though we have a wonderful 'sexy' Apple store not 10 minutes from my home, I have never really used one of these wonderful devices. Not because they are not highly desirable, but simply because; a) if I had this amount of money to spend on new computing kit, I'd buy a laptop and ; b) in the light of school fees, I never have this amount of money to spend!

However, it struck me that most people who are fortunate to have such a device either waft them around as a glorified camera, or give it to their kids to play 'Angry Birds' and I wonder how many utilise the full potential of these amazing tablet devices.

So, in summary: if you aspire to one of these devices, are thinking of getting one or have one already and can only play the odd game and take pictures of your Golden Retriever - then, quite simply, regardless of your age; this is the book for you. Many thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful and accessible 9 Aug 2012
By Z. Herbert VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I was in two minds when I bought my iPad as to whether or not I was letting optimism overshadow experience but thanks to this book I am up and running. The content progresses logically, the style is very easy to read and I have found it so helpful.

I like the larger font (pass my specs, will you, please?) and the down-to-earth, reassuring way it leads me through what could be an unamusing maze. I like the simple Tips scattered like sweeties throughout the book. I like being able to use my new toy without be afraid of falling flat on my face. Suddenly I feel I understand what I am doing and why I am doing it. The book gives me enough background explanation without blinding me with a shower of over-complexities. I can do it! I can do it!
