4.0 out of 5 stars The long wait is over!, 11 Mar 2008
By Anij (Cornwall, UK) - See all my reviews
I absolutely cannot agree with the first reviewer, who only gave this long-awaited Pocket PC two stars. This is the best and sharpest screen on a PPC that I have seen: the sharpness and bright colours are unique and the screen can be read in almost any lighting conditions (though I haven't made any experience yet with bright sunlight, but I'm positive it'll even be outstanding there). This Ipaq means serious business and lots of fun!

Agreeing with the first reviewer though, compared to the Ipaq 2210, which I used for more than three years now, the touch sensitivity does let this device down a bit especially if you are reliant on smooth handwriting (hence only 4 stars).

Be aware that the Ipaq 214 is big with its 4" screen, but I actually love that fact. It is a device that you can seriously work with, connectivity via WLan (b and g) or Bluetooth 2.0 is much faster than before. Having downloaded Netfront browser for Windows mobile, it is a real joy now to surf the internet. And suddenly the screen sensitivity is no issue at all with Netfront, where you can easily and very comfortably use your thumb for browsing. Thanks to the large sharp screen I actually really enjoy reading textbooks and other ebooks now; on the older 2210 reading became a real strain on the eyes after only a few minutes.

So far, after a week of using it daily, I could also notice that Windows Mobile 6 appears far more reliable than the old Windows CE 2003 edition which occasionally crashed. Something that might interest users of older devices like me is that most of the programs that I had additionally downloaded onto my old device are running smoothly on the new Windows 6 one. I have also tried programs which were specifically released for Windows 5 and had no issues with them.

I am very pleased with HP for releasing an "old-fashioned" but modernized Ipaq without a phone function. This is first of all a handheld computer that I can seriously use for work and study as well as for fun (music, videos, games), thanks to the hundreds of programs that are available on dedicated sites and thanks to the CF and SD card slots which give you all the storage you could want on a handheld. On the other hand, I can absolutely not understand why a cradle is not included in the pack, but then this Ipaq is cheap compared to the prices of previous models. By the way, Amazon's price of £222 includes VAT and is therefore certainly lower than HP's suggested retail price.

Overall, I have waited 2 years for a Pocket PC with these specs and a screen like this. Touch sensitivity certainly needs to be improved but the wait was definitely worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars IPAQ 214 day to day, 27 Aug 2008
By R. Bowman - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Yes it's big and if you can get by that point it's very quick. It will fit in an average shirt pocket. It becomes more useful when you consider third party applications such as a back up program as it doesn't have one built in.
Best to keep that data safe.
I used to use an ipaq 2200 but this is much more connectable with bluetooth and WiFi. When connected it's possible to read most web sites, though they can be a little big for even this screen so you have to use the scroll bars to get around. The screen is good to view powerpoint presentations on, due to it's large size. It also allows you to see more of the spreadsheet.
Speakers are a little poor for media such as music but with the screen size video is more possible. Having said that the addition of a standard headphone socket is useful. Haven't really pushed the battery yet but it's good for a couple of days. It's possible to get a USB chargig lead which is better as it's less fragile, not as many connections as the supplied one charging and connection lead.
Another useful part of the device,is you can encrypt the data on your CF cards so the information on them is more privatem you know how they're dimple to misplace when you have a couple.
It really is like having a PC in your pocket and not on the desk, depending on how YOU use it or want to use it for.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice clear shame about the annoying hissing audio, 13 April 2008
By Speedy (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this to replace my dead iPAQ 2210 and I was impressed with its very clear display very good for reading pdfs watching DVDs, however there is a loud background hiss which is very annoying when listening to something quiet. Unfortunately Im not the only one to spot this, this is a common problem with this device and hp have provided no resolution, so I had to return mine as faulty. But thinking about buying this again when the problem is sorted I dont think I could be bothered for over £200 for what I paid for it you could spend the same and get twice the functions e.g. MWg Atom V. The only positive it has is its screen size, but who cares when Laptops are getting so cheap now, to me this device is BORING and nothing new from my 2210 which is 4 years old. I wouldnt pay for this paper weight

Disappointing HP invest in R&D next time.
