First off, if you don't know any OO programming languages, maybe start with their beginner's book Objective-C Programming. However, if you do know something like Java (as I did, to a basic level) then you will likely be able to launch straight into this as it starts pretty basic and guides you through all of the classes used throughout the book (with the exception of the blindingly obvious). Maybe find an online tutorial that teaches the basic syntax of C or something.

If you don't know what a String is, get their beginner's Objective-C book!

I've been through this and their Android equivalent book, and will compare it to that. Firstly, they are both (in general) really great books. Well written, fairly light hearted and not too technical. Out of the two, this one is the better written, especially for a novice, as it explains everything very clearly. At no point was I ever lost or confused about what I was doing. That did happen on occasion in the Android book.

As always in these coding books, there are a few errors here and there. As I bought this (4th) edition about 2 days after it came out the forums were not overly helpful (the errata section on the Android book's forum lists most of the errors, so if something isn't working as it should a quick check there normally comes to the rescue). However, I have to say that there were really no major errors, a couple of bits here and there but nothing that is going to throw you completely.

There are challenges at the end of most chapters which try to get you to do a bit of independent learning. The challenges in this book are not very good though. They are broken down into bronze, silver and gold challenges.

Easily the best Objective-C/iOS book I've come across. Their approach takes a little while to get used to, they skip a lot of details and tell you not to worry about them...but they do come back to them later when they'll make more sense but it's hard to just carry on like that to begin with.

Totally worth it though, even though I've been developing apps for 5 years now I've been a bit of a one trick pony and a lot of concepts have gone over my head. This book is like the contact lenses of iOS Dev, things just seem more clear and make sense!

I'd recommend going through their objective C book first though if you're total newbie.

Briliant book! As long as you know a little Objective-C this book is awesome! I knew Java before, and bought their book on Objective-C. Very good combo

I recommend this book highly but it will serve you better if you first view some training videos such as the ones published at the cs76.tv website. Start reading after some basic training so that you can make faster progress and have an opportunity to see slightly different ways of doing the same thing. Visit the book's forum. That helps a lot particularly if you are stuck with some of the challenges presented at the end of each chapter. Buy the latest edition of this book, the one covering the latest edition of Apple's iOS.

I've read previous Big Nerd Ranch books on Cocoa Programming so immediately chose this book when I needed to learn iOS programming. Certainly not disappointed. Clear and concise, teaches you how to get the job done but doesn't skimp on the details.

Highly recommended if you want to learn iOS programming properly.

The perfect iOS, Objective-C and XCode starter manual I was looking for. It does assume prior C experience.

Really good to learn all the basics to create and ship and iOS app. It contains information about every step in the end to end process.

Strongly recommended!
