This book is for the iMac introduced in 2011 rather than the drive-less wafer-thin model introduced in late November 2012. As a recent newcomer from PC I was at bit at sea when confronted with the intricacies of the Mac and its non-Microsoft 'quirks'. However, the opening Parts I-III, although fairly basic, allow you to get the Mac up and running but the useful chapter on creating user accounts which I felt was needed at this early stage is only dealt with in chapter 20!

There are some particularly good chapters dealing with basic general information such as 'opening and closing and clicking', 'making the most of your home folder', 'system preferences' and 'housekeeping'. These are great as an introduction to Mac but I can also see they will be useful for reference in the future. There are also very useful chapters on apps like 'iPhoto', ''iTunes', 'garageband' which all came with my machine and also chapters on apps which were not included such as 'Keynote', 'iWeb' and 'pages' - this seemed a bit like product placement, inducing you to buy these apps.

Like all 'Dummies' guides this book is written in a light-hearted, humorous way but it is still very informative and is a seriously useful aide providing both an invaluable introduction to iMac and, with its well-organised comprehensive index, also a continuing reference source.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple and easy to use 21 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The book is exactly as expected. Very simply written and easy to understand and covers the basics, although it doesn't go into too much detail on setting up mail accounts. Other than that it is just a basic introduction to using an iMac.

Just brought an iMac, book covers all the necessary bits to get you started and covers all the bits that are in the numerous Apple mags that I have brought at considerably more than this book! Really good buy, thanks.
