PDA Phone wins Gadget Girl's heart!, 19 Mar 2004
This review is from: i-mate GSM/GPRS Pocket PC - SIM free (Electronics)
I have only had my I-mate for a week, but I am certainly impressed with it and would recommend it to anyone remotely considering a PDA phone combo. For over a year I have had a Sony Ericsson P800 which is certainly more phone than PDA, compared to the I-mate which is a full Pocket PC machine with Tri-band functionality built in too (oh and a camera to boot).
You have instant email and internet anywhere with in-built GPRS (which was, by the way, completely painless to set up considering the I-mate is SIM free and therefore has no network/ operator software pre-installed).
The 64k screen is very bright, clear and easy to read under all lighting conditions, and the variable backlight assists this.
The software that comes with it is certainly enough to start you off with, though I have already trialled many of the thousands of other programs available. And if you're worried about space, don't! The I-mate has 128MB built in, plus an SD/MMC expansion slot (and there is an optional expansion jacket that takes CF cards as well as an additional battery and VGA out)
The one thing I miss from the SE P800 is the battery length - the I-mate will do around 3 hours of constant use on one charge, though lasts considerably longer on 'stand-by' (if you can put it down). On the bright side, it charges quickly and the number of adapters, chargers and sync options are almost endless. EG I have the desk unit in the office, a Mini-sync cable for the car, 9v battery adapter for my handbag, main charger or USB sync for home (with adapters for abroad). As the I-mate is identical to the XDA2, there are loads of accessories already available.
With cut down versions of Word and Excel and full synchronisation with Outlook, you really can put the office in your pocket (or handbag) and go.
Oh and the handwriting recognition is simply stunning
And so is Voice Command - with this software, you can talk to your I-mate and it talks back at you (appointments, contacts, etc)
All in all, it's a stunning piece of kit, well designed, looks the part and does the job.

i-Mate Pros & Cons, 9 Sep 2004
This review is from: i-mate GSM/GPRS Pocket PC - SIM free (Electronics)
This product means I don't carry a mobile and a PDA any more. It's all here in a neat and sensible package that gives you all you should need. As a PDA it's stunning, with Micrsoft Pocket PC 2003 you can't go wrong. As a phone its a bit bulky and sometimes I still take my Nokia 8910i out with me instead of my i-Mate. On the whole the size is a draw back and the battery life could be better. I guess as time moves on these types of product will get smaller and battery life will be increased. Until then you should seriously consider this as a viable replacement to your mobile and a PDA. You can run your life from this bit of kit and as a bonus you can make it ring like a phone rather than an irritating toy. The price and the complexity of this product should also mean that it will remain in the realms of grown up people!

Top Toy, 17 Oct 2004
This review is from: i-mate GSM/GPRS Pocket PC - SIM free (Electronics)
Over the years I've had a hatful of PDA's starting with one of the very first Psion's, through Apple Newton and Palm OS and the iMate is clearly ahead of anything I've used or seen before.
The Pocket PC software is common across a huge range of PDA's but the iMate makes the best of it with great looks, intuitive placement of controls and a great screen.
The phone's sound, with better reception than many and because it's tri-band you'll be able to use it in the States and other backward territories!
I run a Mac and the iMate doesn't sync without additional software but for a small outylay a program called Pocket Mac gives the full functionality available with a Windows PC.
I wouldn't be without it (until the next groovy gadget turns up!).
