Image of Hot Chip

Hailing from London, Hot Chip entered the picture with the release of their 2000 debut, Mexico. The EP was issued by Victory Garden Records, a label owned and operated by members of London's resident lo-fi psychedelic rock institution Southall Riot. The Mexico EP was a hypnotic wash of subtle -- nearly subliminal -- pulse-like techno beats, acoustic guitars, and plinky pianos, but the ... Read more in Amazon's Hot Chip Store

This one starts quite well, but soon meanders off and becomes fairly forgettable. The first track, Night Moves, brings you in nice and slow, then POW! Positive K with I Got A Man gets your hips and shoulders working. After that some enjoyable electronic noodling, which then lasts the rest of the album. It gets to the point I can't tell one tune from the next. Aside from the first 3 or 4 tracks, there doesn't feel like there is any direction in this mix, any energy, any variety. Don't get me wrong, there is track after track of great, great tunes, but considering how good Hot Chip are at creating fun, energetic and enjoyable music, this album is surprisingly flat.

Making a mix album when there's 5 of you must be a real pain, who gets to choose the most tunes? what order do the tunes go in? are you allowed to disagree with any one elses choices?

Either way, Hot Chip have succeded where i would probably of failed and made a good ecclectic mix tape. The choice of tunes ranges from full on techno to early rhythm and blues, and its not so much mixed as songs put back to back, but dont let this put you off, it flows well (for the most part) and has introduced me to some new music and that is never a bad thing.

Stand out track for me was Hot Chips own tune "My Piano" a classic example of what makes them so good. Conclusion: If you like Hot Chip you'll like this

This mix CD takes in such a variety of styles, but never loses it edge. The opening 'Night Moves' is a real gem, as is Hot Chip's own 'My Piano'. Also of note are tracks from Gabriel Ananda and Noze's 'Love Affair'. This mix showcases why the next Hot Chip album will kick ass. I slightly disagree with the below comment about the mixing, I think it is mixed reasonably well throughout, with only a few occasions were the tracks are started from scratch or merely blended in.
5 starts from me.

Very good. 8 Sep 2007

I definitely disagree with the other guy. One star? C'mon man. The track selection here is great -- My Piano, Steppin Out, Bizzare Love Triangle, etc. Great stuff. So, yeah, the mixing is not alway stellar, but then again Hot Chip is putting together disparate genres with wildly differing bpms -- songs, it should be remembered, that aren't always in a 12" long intro format. So I can definitely overlook a less-than-seemless house mix (there are no "trainwrecks" here my man).

And btw, if you think the mixing on this album is much different than many in the DJ kicks series, you're wrong. The occassional choppy segway is the price of being eclectic and actually taking chances. If you want a perfectly seemless mix go pop in your tiesto. I'll stick to real music, thanks.

Four stars for a daring and fun mix.

It Got Under My Skin 6 Dec 2007

I took a chance and picked this up after hearing it at a listening station and being so baffled and intrigued that I had to decipher it for myself. At first, I thought it was just wilfully obscure, but I was determined to crack it because I sensed that there was a heart beating underneath the cool surface. I kept listening to it over and over, trying to take in the wide scope of the thing, and then I couldn't stay away from it. I found myself reaching for it again and again and I grew to absolutely love it. It has a lonely soul inside it that I find very appealing. If this sounds at all interesting to you, I would advise you to take a chance. You might fall in love with it as I have. There's a warmth to it that I find irresistable. Don't resist.

I have to completely disagree with the 1 star review of this album. This album is NOT a 1-2 star. I am very pleased with the wide variety of styles here and the manner in which they are arranged. As mentioned in the "formal" reviews, this collection covers everything from minimalist techno to "I got a man" to Ray Charles, who is always a delight to listen to. Very enjoyable. Not to mention, the Hot Chip song "My Piano" is great. After the first listen I knew this would only get better as I listened to it more. Anyway, I had to chime in on this album and give it some of the justice it deserves. If you like a wide variety of music and appreciate collections that offer an interesting mix of it, you should find this quite enjoyable.
Great mix with one of HC's best songs ever 5 Mar 2014

While the whole mix is worthwhile, perhaps the main reason to pick this up is for the exclusive Hot Chip song "My Piano". It's easily in my top 5 favorite songs from the band and essential for anyone who loves HC

1000 monkeys with 1000 turntables... 28 Mar 2008
By Troy Parsons - Published on

This album has some great tracks on it, but you may well only like half of this album. Which half depends on your taste. I bought this album after hearing several of the more innovative tracks on this album. Some tracks make me want to throw my iPod under a train.

This DJ Kicks outing for Hot Chip is like several of your drunk mates fighting over the music at your house party. Some people may like this dyslexic mix of music, but I'd personally agree that it's a train wreck. Not that it needs to be beat mixed, or eq'd or whatever... but at least a coherent journey of some kind be it emotional or musical. A much better case is made by the back to mine series, say the Orbital or Orb mixes.

Overrated? Yep, definitely.
2 stars only because there is a couple of really ace tracks.
Buy the songs elsewhere, mix it yourself.
