    First the positives.

Brilliant bit of kit. High quality recording, very easy to set recordings, superb picture quality. It does the job really well.

However, compared to another PVR - I previously owned a HUMAX 9200T - some features are really annoying.

    i) On the programme guide, the area at the left hand side is used for annoying adverts. I don't expect to have features like this on equipment that costs this much.
ii) On playback there is a 60 sec skip forward and 10 sec skip back. Each press takes a couple of seconds to process. So skipping adverts is quite tedious. Skip, wait, skip, wait,........ When you discover you have gone past the adverts, you have to backtrack in 10 sec Intervals. The human with instant 30 sec skip times (user adjustable) was so much more user friendly.
iii) Although the unit connects to a home network and can see and use the media server on your home computer, the home computer cannot access any of the recorded programmes over the network. Instead you have to copy recordings onto blue-Ray, SD card or onto an attached USB hard drive.
iv) the vier a link is useful when attached to a panasonic tv. But not all controls on one remote are present on the other-its not easy to recognize which device you are controlling - the tv or the recorder.

But it's a good bit of kit. I'll get used to most of the issues, but the adverts? I'm really quite irritated by.

First, other reviews: OK, so the programme guide does have an advert on the left third, but it did not annoy me as my Panasonic TV uses the same guide with the same adverts so I was used to it! A few weeks ago a programme guide supplier went bust leaving some Freeview boxes with no guide at all, so if the advert stops that from happening in the future, I will tolerate it! The aspect ratio takes a bit of setting up, had to change my TV from AUTO to 16:9 and this box to 16:9 so that 4:3 porgrammes are displayed correctly (ie not stretched and with bars down left and right side). I had a Humax 9200/9300 too and the TV guide used to mute the sound and tv picture was lost but a firmware update cured that and 50 other problems so let's hope the same happens here in due course!

Now, picture quality is excellent. FreeView HD has deep, rich qualities on BBCHD, ITV1 HD and Ch4 HD. I am not new to HD (have Virgin) so it's not first impressions of HD! No Channel5HD but BBC One HD from 3 November 2010. The instruction book is thick but misses some important details, eg having to format a DVD before it can be used to record. The FreeView+ 'accurate recording' system seems to work only when the exact times are put in (i.e. EastEnders 1930-2000) - the book recommends you pad the start and finish times but this renders 'accurate recording' useless. Only got the machine yesterday so have not tried all the features but suitably impressed so far.

Picture is great on my Panasonic TV. With the Viera Link functions this unit , the TV and the Panasonic Cinema Surround system volume all can be controlled from this units remote. The TV picture / TV timer program can record direct to the HDD of the BW880 via the scart lead with no problems. You have got to make sure hdmi leads are fully wired for the Viera Link control function - some cheaper ones aren't.
Everything automatically set up ok. Also no problem viewing recorded programs via wireless network on a laptop (Windows 7)- just open up Windows Media Player and double click the recording - plays with good quality.
The only niggle I had was that the Picture output via hdmi for some TV channels is not automatically recognised by the TV. Had to make sure the TV was set as aspect 16:9 and not Auto (for the BW880 input) - otherwise the picture appeared compressed horizontally, making faces look tall and thin. Also had to set the way that 4:3 pictures are output from the BW880 so that they were 16:9 with black bars on each side, otherwise the TV aspect settings would have to be continually changed. I don't have to touch the aspect settings now.
I also agree that the advert on the guide is annoying as it restricts the viewable area of the guide.
The Panasonic Customer Care Service seems good and they seemed willing to help with any questions.
Seems to have everything I need, which includes connections for recording video via DV off my camcorder (without the need for a computer with a firewire port).

Excellent product, does everything it promises to and having upgraded from an old-style DVD recorder it has literally changed our lives! Lots of features, excellent quality. Only negative comment I would make is that it takes a bit of time to power up, but so do a lot of electronics these days.
I should also mention that some product literature might give the impression that you can't record two programmes simultaneously when using the timer, but I found that in fact you can do so.

I finally sold my Sky HD box and opted for this. I was annoyed that in order to tape onto my Sky box I had to have a subscription hence the reason for my purchase of the DMR-BW880. I have no regrets as I got this at a very discounted price from Amazon (I was lucky to spot a brief price drop). The key wonders of this unit includes the beautiful picture clarity, the huge hard disk capacity, the ability to transfer HDD content to disk, the ability to load music onto the Hard disk from a USB stick (although it took ages to load 599 songs), the ability to view contents from an SD or USB, the ability to make 2x TV recordings simultaneously. These are the things that I am aware of from simple trial and error. The unit is very intuitive but I will refer to the instruction manual to help me set up my connection to WiFi.

The things that annoy me about the unit is that there is a slight time delay when progressing between key presses and therefore this makes the system seem clunky. The EPG is a little cluttered and oh of course there are those annoying adverts to the left of the screen that take up valuable space when the current TV programme could be running in that area of the screen. I hope Panasonic will listen to their customers when they feedback the same comments.

Overall and on balance, considering the price I purchased the item for, it is worth every penny. The reason for only allocating 4 stars is because of the clunkiness, crowded EPG and oh? - did I mention those dratted ads????? :-)
