CC Hogan says:
My mother wrote this book many years ago just for the family, but she has recently reworked it into this larger, 140,000 word version.

I would love to hear what people think of the book. It shows a very different side to the empire, the side that is nothing to do with imperialism, but just about ordinary people living and working with the people of a far distant country. It is a story that if it had not been written down would have been forgotten, drowned by the broad brush strokes of the big histories of that time.

It is a very personal, human tale and, in addition, my mother turns out to be one very talented writer!
