2.0 out of 5 stars TOUR DU MONT BLANC BY JIM MANTHORPE 28 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was disappointed with this book. Although I haven't yet used it in the field, I found it very difficult to use as a source for planning my own walk. Not everyone wants to stick to the set number of days and rest points given in the book and one therefore needs to know the times as well as distances between each point. Although the "Suggested Itineraries" list distances, it doesn't give times despite the approximate timings being far more important than distances when walking in the mountains. The author recognises this in putting approximate times on the maps but in order to do any planning, one has to study each map, making a note of each time and in places the times are confusing. It gives little information on the ascents and descents to be experienced each day although some information is given in the text and there are cross sections but it is difficult to find the information one needs to plan a trip where a summary of each days walk, time, distance, ascent and descent would have been very helpful. Perhaps the maps will turn out to be the real bonus, otherwise I wouldn't recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beware 28 Nov 2011
Do not buy this book, as I did, out of a casual interest in the title. It is a captivating read and incredibly full of all the information needed to walk the tour. It is the author's style and enthusiasm for his subject which makes it so interesting and has inspired me to see if this guide is as practically useful as 'Scottish Highlands The Hillwalking Guide'

5.0 out of 5 stars Tour du Mont Blanc is superb! 10 Sep 2009
By Howard C. Higgins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book (Tour du Mont Blanc by Manthorpe) is a vital reference to any desiring to do a self guided tour of Mont Blanc. My wife and I used it during our recent tour, and found it invaluable. The sketch maps and directions are excellent. Over-all, it was of more use than the "official" guide. Furthermore, the photos and supplementary information are of high quality. I would recommend this book without reservation.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the TMB guide book to get! 7 Sep 2013
By A. W. Lord - Published on Amazon.com
If you are doing the TMB self-guided - or even with a guide but you want lots of fun and interesting information - this guide book is far superior to the Cicerone one. We just returned from completing the TMB with both the Cicerone and this guide book and this was the one we used consistently. It is a practical guide: the maps are well-drawn, full of useful details, spot-on accurate and easy to quickly reference on the trail. We didn't have to decipher paragraphs of verbiage relative to colorful but vaguely drawn maps, as in the Cicerone guide book. Besides pointing out fun things to look for ("good marmot country", "sign banning everything", "birthplace of astronomer who discovered Neptune"), the maps give an idea of gradient and ascending or descending trail and point out where the trail gets obscure or difficult to find. This helped us know what to expect each day and gave us more confidence handling the trail. In addition, this guide book is written with a sense of humor and that's vitally important on this sort of adventure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book 20 Mar 2010
By Colorado_Reviewer - Published on Amazon.com
I found the book to be concise with clear coverage of information including trnsportation, trials, accomodations and more required to plan a Tour du Mont Blanc trip. The material is current. The included trail maps on book pages are clear and use designations that are fairly easy to follow. It is a book that, by itself, would enable a person to plan a Mont Blanc hike. I especially liked the pages near the back of the book that linked locations identified on a large trail map to various internet site URLs, such as the Les Houches Ski Area tram information, that might be helpful to a trip planner.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Next Walk 19 May 2013
By D. House - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have been interested in the Tour du Mont Blanc for a while, and this book has all the right information to get me ready for the walk. It discusses each day's walk in very great detail, with easy to understand maps that shows altitude, steepness and most important where the next place to stay for the night might be. Also, depending on your schedule and whether you want to walk the entire route or just parts of it, this book will help to decide which parts that might be. I like the color photos that shows how beautiful this area is, making me really want to go. The book is chock full of contact info, what you need to take, what time of the year to go, go it alone or in a group and so on. Highly recommended if you are interested in Tour du Mont Blanc.
