Product Description

Description

Natalie Imbruglia is one of the most successful Australian pop acts of all time. Following the release of 'Counting Down The Days' (2005), Imbruglia immediately started work on the follow up. Four years in the making, 'Come To Life' features some of the singer's best work to date and includes collaborations with the likes of Brian Eno on production and Chris Martin on songwriting, as well as the single 'Wild About It'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, solid album and even better live, 11 Nov 2009
By D. Redshaw (Newcastle Upon Tyne United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Natalie Imbruglia has delivered her best album since Left of the Middle. The production is tighter, more electro than grungy, but she delivers great vocals to some well written songs. Everyone knows by now Chris Martin has helped Natalie with this album with re-working Want, giving them a bside called Lukas and a song written entirely for Natalie called Fun, which is an atmospheric ballad, so don't let the name be misleading.

The confidence that she has gained since her divorce is shown on each track. You have to to go the album a good listen, because there's quite a bit in between production and the lyrics Natalie is singing so not every track is immediately catchy but it has grown into a solid album that I can listen to track by track to. Her live performance at The Luminaire showed the range of her singing and style, making this album a great addition to her previous live tracks like Big Mistake. It really swung it for me and made me give the album a listen.

My favorites are Lukas, Fun, Twenty, Scars, All The Roses... many of these stood out to me, and the other songs, particulary My God and Wild About It grew on me. As a stand alone song Wild About It is quirky, as is the online video of it, but as an album closer it actually works, bringing together the experience of the album, it's clear inbetween the lyrics and her new videos she's done a lot of soul searching and found a confident, mature direction with her music. This is quite intelligant pop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its a good album people, 22 Oct 2009
Im a bit suprised reading the negative reviews here, the album is not bad at all and does not deserve such low ratings. This album may not be the best of Imbruglia, however there are still some really great tracks here that are beautifully sung. My fav at this time is the moving 'Fun'

As for the single 'Want' I quite like it, its good to hear a different side to Natalie on a more upbeat track with great remixes out there. Want, does not really represent the sound of the album though, the rest are typical mid tempo, middle of the road songs that still have the charm of her previous albums.

Dont be too quick to judge this album on the negative reviews, best to make up your own mind on this one, give it a listen at least.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe The Hype, 6 Nov 2009
Having read some of the reviews on this site, I was a little apprehensive about receiving this CD. I ordered it from Amazon US on the strength of the new material on 'Glorious' and didn't want to wait until February for it to be released in the UK.

I'd previously downloaded the track 'Want', which took a bit of getting used to (not a good sign when some of the lyrics were pinched from 'Be With You', my favourite of the new tracks on the previous release).

Things didn't start well. The first track was appropriately titled, as I took an instant dislike to 'Oh God' but things improved massively with 'Lukas' (my favourite track). As I seem to recall a previous reviewer saying, 'Fun' has quite a Christmasy feel to it. 'Twenty' and 'Scars' are also really good and I liked all of the other tracks, through to the bouncy closer 'Wild About It'.

After a few listens I was singing along and even the opener had grown on me. In fact, I like the album so much I've since ordered the Japanese release, which has a bonus track on it.

My one gripe about the album itself is that it only has 10 tracks, which is bad value (particularly having paid more to import it).

I was disapponted to read that the album only sold 740 copies in it's first week of release in Australia. I can only assume the record company there did nothing to promote it.

Also, what is going on in the UK? Why the wait until February, almost 5 months after it's release elsewhere? Strange when you thing that this must be one of her biggest markets.

If you like Natalie's previous work, then I fail to see how you can't like 'Come To Life'. Yes, it's different to what she has done before but wouldn't it be boring if every release from an artist sounded exactly the same?

Give it a chance.
