Product Description

CD Description

Formed from members of Scottish alternative heroes Biffy Clyro and Suciopierro, Ayrshire duo Marmaduke Duke fuse avant-garde leanings with hardcore sounds. Their second LP, 'Duke Pandemonium', forms the second instalment in a trilogy that began in 2005 with the epic 'The Magnificent Duke'. The duo's impressive sense of scope remains on this effort, crammingin many generic experiments that include funk, soul and theodd electro flourish. This is Marmaduke Duke's first album on a major label, and features the single 'Rubber Lover'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marmaduke Duke Juke Box Heaven, 24 May 2009
By The Wolf (uk) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (VINE VOICE)
Marmaduke Duke are almost quaint. Quaint but not cutesy.
Between them Mr Neil and Mr Reid possess a substantial and refined musical imagination.
They also have a sense of fun and in these dark days that can be no bad thing.

The ten tracks which constitute 'Duke Pandemonium' may well provide part of the
soundtrack to the long hot summer which we would appear to have been promised.

Things begin well with twitchy crickets in the long grass moments before the big
beats of 'Heartburn' kick in. The song doesn't settle down to a steady groove.
The rhythmic disruptions are unpredictably satisfying.

'Everybody Dance' is a splendidly out of control speed-disco romp.
The falsetto vocal harmonies are an absolute hoot.

Likewise 'Silhouettes' whose staccato guitar and manic beats must make a great live number.

Shades of Mr Byrne and Mr Murphy (LCD SS) drift in an out here and elsewhere
but that is no bad thing.
These talented young gentlemen would appear to have found a more than
good enough voice of their own.

'Music Show' demonstrates a somewhat darker sound palette.
The jangling guitar chords contrasting nicely with driving percussion.

'Kid Gloves' is a very fine pop song. The pizzicato synth is perfectly judged.

Coming in at something over seven minutes 'Demon' is probably the
most adventurous composition in the collection. The synthesis of stark
electronica, accoustic elements and hard beats coalesces eventually in
a strangely affecting long anthemic coda.
A new 'All You Need Is Love' for the twitter generation.

'Erotic Robot' is very funny.

'Je Suis Un Funky Homme' might make you get your flares in a twist
if you dared to try to dance to it !

Mr Zappa would have been proud to have written 'Rubber Lover'.
Two minutes of sublimely perverse Scottish ecstacy.

'Skin The Mofo' is full of sunshine. The quasi-caribbean rhythms and very
rude chorus provide an upbeat conclusion to this splendid little album.

Another random purchase which I am more than happy to recommend very highly to you.

Cracking Stuff !

4.0 out of 5 stars Je Suis Un Funky Homme!, 3 Jun 2009
By James Mcwilliam Woods "Wimsé Jaboe" (Hampshire, England) - See all my reviews

Duke Pandemonium certainly marks a change in style for these Ayrshire lads. Their music has taken a much more poppier direction on this, their second album. For those of you who liked The Magnificent Duke, there are tracks here that could've been picked straight off that album, whereas tracks like 'Rubber Lover' and 'Je Suis Un Funky Homme' are certainly more radio friendly.

This is a good album, but certainly not a great album. Well worth buying if you like Biffy's lighter stuff or the Duke's debut.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, 26 Jun 2009

Not a bad album, kid gloves and rubber lover are great, the rest is quite different and a bit 'all over the shop'. Would recommend the singles and sticking to Biffy instead.
