5.0 out of 5 stars I miss you more than I knew, 27 Oct 2005
By Young Offender (Westbury, Wilts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Let Go (Audio CD)
I discovered Let Go after hearing the fabulous 'Blonde on Blonde' on the soundtrack to the German film 'Summer Storm' - I was convinced that it was Josh Rouse, but waited for the end of the credits to see that it was these guys. There are two other brilliant songs here, 'Blizzard of 77' and 'Inside of Love': all three are absolutely as good as pop music gets, managing to be both personal and universal at once and doing what Neil Tennant said that all great pop should do, making you 'feel happy feeling sad'. There are other good tracks here, but this album is absolutely essential for these three songs alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best power-pop album of 2002, 30 Oct 2002
By Mr. M. J. Hulme - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)    (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Let Go (Audio CD)
This is a new injection of life into a rock and roll scene that has become depressingly predictable. Nada Surf have conspired to write twelve cleverly thought out, beautifully structured songs that still demand repeated listens weeks and months after first hearing them. When comparisons to other bands are sought, the most-used similarity is drawn with Weezer - now, although Nada Surf share the three minute pop song sensibility, their songs are so much smarter and edgier than the average power-pop band.

Opener 'Blizzard of '77' sets out to prove this - just an acoustic guitar and vocal for the whole two and a half minutes, confounding people that were expecting fuzzed-up guitars and vocal harmonies. However, they aren't long in coming - Way You Wear Your Head, Hi Speed Soul, Happy Kid and Treading Water are all perfect three minute blasts of controlled aggression with vocal harmonies to die for - catchy, melodic, powerful, exactly what they should be. You can hear their appreciation for bands like Teenage Fanclub and Big Star, and it appears that Nada Surf are flying the same flag.

The standout tracks are the slower, darker ones - Dylan homage Blonde On Blonde is exquisite, all A minors and F majors underneath softly sung vocals. Equally, Inside Of Love owes something to Blur's Coffee And TV, but the acoustic/electric guitar interplay lifts it up to another level altogether. Fruit Flies, meanwhile, begins as an acoustic ode to rotting fruit - bizarre, I know - and develops into a crashing, uplifting wall of noise. If this is the Nada Surf blueprint for the future, then we've finally found a band worthy of carrying the 'Big Star' torch.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine record, 5 April 2005
This review is from: Let Go (Audio CD)
I bought this album on the strength of the first track ('Blizzard of '77) which made a lasting impression. This is a great track because of strong songwriting and simplicity, a contrast to much of the music on of 'alternative' radio here in the UK. The rest of the album is uneven in comparison but I think this is because there are some very good tracks and some which aren't necessarily poor, just a bit less special. 'Blonde on Blonde' is mesmerising, it radiates rainy afternoons and is the album's stand-out track. There are happier moments though, 'No Quick Fix' is a sing-along, perfect moment with your mates type affair. Personally I would have preferred the introspective territory on this album to be explored further, because good songwriting which is both melancholic and uplifting is hard to come by. Overall this is a fine record, and is a good example of what bands should aim for after their teenage angst period.
