Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Skunk Anansie's debut album ran contrary to the grain. While everyone around them was celebrating the resolutely white-boy, hedonistic, traditional 1960s-based sounds of Britpop, these four Londoners released a multi-racial, politically-charged album that owed as much to the funk visions of Sly & The Family Stone and Living Colour as it did to the metal mightiness of prime Black Sabbath. On songs such as "Intellectualise My Blackness" and "100 Ways To Be A Good Girl", vocalist Skin directly confronted people's prejudices and threw them straight back in their faces. Elsewhere, tracks like "Selling Jesus" and "I Can Dream" showcase her voice pretty much at the height of its power... indeed, this whole album captures the band in top form, with hardly a weak track present. --Everett TrueEND

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic debut album., 22 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Paranoid and Sunburnt (Audio CD)
From the opening chords of "Selling Jesus" to the closing notes of "Rise Up", Skunk Anansie do not fail to entertain. Skin has an amazing voice and you feel her emotion as she sings about racial injustices and other social issues on this amazing album. "Weak" is a fantastic ballad, "I can dream" is a super charged slice of punk pop that Skunk Anansie deliver so well. This album is simply a must for any Skunk Anansie fan to own.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Album from a Brilliant Band, 9 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Paranoid and Sunburnt (Audio CD)
Being the proud owner of the later two skunk anansie albums i decided to buy the first one. i was a little dubious at first as i only could recall hearing one song (weak) but immediately when i listened to it i was very pleased with my new purchase. there are some real rock ballads on this album and skins strong lyrics and powerful voice are done justice to in tracks such as Intellectualise My Blackness, Charity and Weak. a gentler track can be found in 100 Ways To Be a Good Girl but there are no weak songs on this album, all are great without exception and i would definately recommend this to any skunk anansie fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential part of any collection., 23 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Paranoid and Sunburnt (Audio CD)
This album should be an integral part of any metal music fans collection. Tracks such as 'Weak' and 'Charity' can be considered two of the best tracks the band ever produced, whilst most other songs on the album follow not far behind. Skin's talent as a vocalist combines with the genius of Ace on the lead guitar, to make this album truely a classic of the 1990s.
