Written from the perspective of watching the TV series:

Created by the writing and production team which made Two and a Half Men such a success Mom involves a family at the other end of the social scale. Christy, recovering alcoholic, trying to straighten out her life while supporting two children, teenager Violet and her younger half-brother Roscoe; into the mix comes her own mother Bonnie also recovering alcoholic but with a far more gaudy past and some old traits do not go away. Very shortly into the series Violet finds she is pregnant by her amiable stoner boyfriend Luke and thus the series involves the individual and shared stories of this potentially disastrous mix trying to do ‘The Right Thing’.

It says much for the talents of the writers and actors that they make this a very funny journey of very flawed folk who still manage to put across the positive and hopeful theme of Keep On Keeping On.
Much of the strength relies on the talents of Anna Faris (Christy) and Allison Janney (Bonnie) whose individual and combined efforts cause comic and dramatic sparks to fly off in all directions, both physical and verbal, as they alternate playing the straight-guy to the other’s delivery. However to keep this mix lively requires the contributions of the variety of supporting characters brought admirably to life by the others of the cast, often given their own centre stage; just as two examples- Violet’s intentions to keep a level head, Luke so likeably inexpert but kindly; each of these are given much room to develop as the series progresses.

With only 20-25 minutes an episode no time is wasted.

This is a sitcom with great wit, humour and very good acting. I almost did not watch as I found it by accident channel hopping one night but I think it was the best US comedy on Tv this year. I really hope they go for another season. This has a great cast and great scripts. All in all very watchable.

Loved this from the very first episode. It's a very rare thing when i actually laugh out loud to a programme but every episode has at least a couple of 'LOL' moments. The comedy is mixed with pathos and the whole thing is expertly written. It reminds me a lot of the old Roseanne show..near the knuckle but oh so funny. Can't wait for season 2

Love this show. It's the best new comedy to come from America in a few years. Glad that I've now got the DVD to watch the episodes again.

Before this I tried Community, Modern Family and Eastbound & Down. None of these impressed me, Mom however did. I've just finished all 22 episodes and I recommend it. Well written and the cast is great. My only problem is the sitcom format. Canned laughter and the seasons are a little long for my liking but if that's what your used to, you'll no doubt love it!

This a fantastic series - so clever, so funny - laugh out loud funny - even when you are travelling alone on an aeroplane! The characters are wonderful. It's a story of their lives, which frequently go wrong, and then there are tears - ours and theirs. So much better than a lot of British comedy.

Not yet viewed and its salted away for a rainy day - or 3! But I enjoyed the series on tv and look forward to revisiting it - and hopefully watching series 2. By the way - check out Chuck Lorres cryptic end pieces - AFTER THE CREDITS!
