The Walking Dead returns with a bang in the highly anticipated new season of the hit post-apocalyptic show. Series three steps up the pace considerably from the last, with a greater emphasis placed on the threat that the living brings in a world ruled by the undead. Many new characters are introduced, including the highly anticipated arrival of a fans favourite; ‘The Governor’. David Morrissey portrays the maniacal and manipulative villain excellently, showing both the charismatic and dark side of an increasingly complex character in equal measure. The season contains a number of standout episodes, such as ‘Clear’ and ‘Killer Within’ to name a few, with the overall quality high throughout. However, having said this, the second half of the season suffers from a slower pace, especially when compared with the high octane start to the first. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, with some of the season’s best writing taking place within the second half; nevertheless, I understand it may not be to everyone’s taste. Likewise, the season finale falls just far of the mark, with the nagging notion that it never quite lived up to its full potential, paling in comparison to the excellent previous penultimate episode, ‘This Sorrowful Life’.
To recap, I thoroughly enjoyed season three, with a great balance of suspense and drama peppered throughout. The Governors character gave the show a real injection of pace and danger which I felt the series needed after the death of Shane, having really enjoyed his story arch. Characters continue to be off’ed and developed at an astonishing rate, with Rick and Carl the most notable (for development of course!). Bar a slow of pace at the beginning of the second half and a frustrating season finale, the walking dead continues to consolidate its place as one of the best shows around.

The zombie stuff just provides the peril and doesn't interest or bother me, my attention is focussed on the community dynamics and the survival drive of the little band of travellers who have through all the devastation formed their own strong family bond. Not sure where it will go after this, hope it doesn't fizzle out because the writers dry up.

I am not a horror or zombie fan, but tried this because I remember Andrew Lincoln from This Life and have enjoyed much of his work since. I was intrigued by the first series and particularly liked many of the supporting cast and their journeys. The cast have been universally strong. David Morrissey, like Lincoln, another reliable, charismatic actor steals the series. Michael Rooker as Merle gives an impressive performance managing to make a completely unsympathetic character sympathetic. He and Norman Reedus give huge depth to their relationship and the abusive childhoods that formed their personalities. Reedus in particular is outstanding, allowing his character to develop throughout the 3 series, changing from troubled, aggressive outsider to Lincoln's right-hand man and trusted advisor, fighting to protect the group which has become his first real family. Reedus also shows a very complex and sweet relationship with Carol, Melissa McBride, which emerged from the loss of Sophia, illustrating the vulnerability under the aggression. McBride is amazing in this role, a scene with Reedus in season 2 where she physically recoils from his verbal blows (spoken through fear of his feelings for her) and which is reflective of her abusive marriage is stunning. It also shows that she has found a kindred spirit, someone who has also been abused, and will not give up on him. The relationship strengthens in season 3 and Carol becomes tougher and more independent. Why McBride is hidden away in guest star status is a mystery to me. her character has always been stronger and more interesting than the irritating Lori or the whining Andrea since season 1. There is also the reappearance of a character from the first episode, another amazing British actor, which was very welcome.Read more ›

The Walking Dead season 3 is great, the storyline pace and action has picked up from season 2. It's got Zombies, Gore, intrigue,Zombies, action and tension and more Zombies. BRILLIANT!.
Now for the actual Bluray, the picture transfer like season 1 & 2 isn't great, it's better than Dvd but it's not watt we know bluray can be, the same has to be said about the sound, if the separation was better and the more intricate noises clearer (Zombies moaning) it would add tremendously to the atmospheric moments which happen through out this series
But saying all that it's still a great intriguing watch.

The Walking Dead - Season 3 goes in a better direction than previous Season 2 IMO.

More action, more bad-ass survivors following a guy who gets them all killed. --Am I the only one who is wondering why Sheriff McGenius hacked one of their most valuable members leg off to "save him before it's too late" when they ALREADY have the virus?

(I must have missed something in the plot-line; getting bitten causes you to turn but getting stabbed or shot with arrows that went through zombies doesn't have any consequence.)

We learn how to turn zombies into pack-mules, a portrayal of the two-faced side of human politics and why the zombie hordes should fear the Samurai.

All-in-all a pretty awesome addition to The Walking Dead series.
