I'm wary of comments like "this is the best comedy in years", but I will say this is one of the new comedies I've enjoyed most in recent years. It's not an outright mockumentary like The Office, but it's more in that direction that a straight sitcom like Friends.

The show centres around a retired father and his two grown up children and their families: Jay is the head of the family and married to a younger and hotter Colombian wife who has a child from her previous marriage; Claire is Jay's daughter and has three kids (popular, smart and stupid) and is married to a husband who tries too hard to be 'cool'; and Mitchell is Jay's gay son, who has recently adopted a baby daughter with his melodramatic husband Cameron.

The programme may be called Modern Family, and be focussed on an extreme version of the potential make-up of a family in the twenty-first century, but it riffs on all the dramas any family is likely to stumble upon across three generations, from kids growing up and parents trying to find the right balance between being friends with their children and being tough with them to divorce and remarriage.

I can't guarantee you'll love Modern Family as much as I do, but I'd urge you to do what you can to check out at least one episode as the whole season is of similar quality and style, so if you like one you'll most likely enjoy them all.

Really, this is one of the comedies I've most enjoyed in years.

I caught the start of the second series of Modern Family on TV and after the first episode was hooked. Quickly had to buy the first series and can only say that this has to be one of the best new comedies to come out in years. The writing is razor sharp, the acting fantastic and I'm sure you will struggle to pick out a favourite character as they are all absolutely superb. The programme brings out some of the best of other classic comedies like the Office, Friends and Arrested Development but brings it all together in a way that makes it accessible to all ages and seem fresh and original. It's not often that a comedy can reduce me to tears of laughter but this has done it numerous times and like all classic comedies, the more times you watch it the funnier the episodes become. Lets hope that the writers can turn out this level of consistency in the future as this could very easily go on to be one of the best comedies of all time.

There isn't a lot to say about this show without sounding like you're fawning over it.Without doubt 1 of the funniest comedies of recent years, the casting and writing are both incredible, the characters are all "believable" and the "mocumentary" style of the show works perfectly. It follows the lives of 3 branches of the same family tree,Jay (the father) with his younger wife Gloria & her son Manny,Claire (Jays daughter) with her husband (and extra kid) Phill and their kids Hayley,Alex and Luke,And Mitchell (Jays son) with his partner Cameron and their adopted daughter Lily.If you're a fan of this show why haven't you bought this already?and if you're not a fan of this show, why aren't you?worth buying even if you've never watched "Modern Family" before because it really is that good, there are, like all shows, some weaker episodes but the best more than make up for them.

This is a series (Seasons 1-4) I can watch again and again; I find it great comfort viewing, and it always makes me smile, even if my 'laugh-out-loud' phase is over. I'm still registering missed jokes, and for that reason I like to watch it with the subtitles on. I like the fact there is no audience laughter, and enjoy the characters sharing their thoughts directly with the camera from time to time, even an expressive look at the camera mid-scene speaks volumes! The cast are excellent; they just bounce off one another and I admire in particular the ability of the younger actors to appear so natural. But like Phil and Mitchell, I could do without 'Fizbo', the clown persona of the latter's partner, Cam.

This series has spoiled me for anything else, but I'd really like to find another show to rival it.

I purchased this as a nominated present for some friends who (in turn) recommended I view it first. This was seen with an open mind & little/no expectations....
What I saw had me seriously entertained from start to finish. Incredibly well-scripted & executed I laughed so much at one point I almost choked on a piece of pizza I was eating during one of the episodes. Clumsy & quirky looking characters but incredibly well-cast, the script & direction pave the way for many side-splitting (& sometimes uncomfortably funny) moments. Fans of Arrested Development will appreciate the style of humour & camera-work direction. This is a perfect series to introduce to any friends who have a great sense/appreciation of sharp, well-executed, & original comedy. A real gem - can't wait for the new series.

Had just caught the odd one or two of these on Sky One recently, and laughed out loud loads (all too rare these days).
Decided to get the Season One box set, and we got through all the episodes in a couple of days.
They are only 26 mins each, so the cry went up "Oh just one more..." after almost every one.
As others have said, it shares similarities with Arrested Development & The Office, in the "mock-doc" style, with the cast occasionally looking straight to camera, and the action interspersed with interviews with the family members about the action.
I can recommend getting the box set to see all episodes in order from the beginning, Sky are showing season 2 currently.
Just go buy this - check out the reviews - ALL 5 STAR!!!
