Initially, it seemed a little bit formulaic -new case to win, more revelations about her imprisoned husband (for corruption) and his extra-marital affairs, new eccentric judge -but while it never did really vary much from this formula, I stopped caring because on the whole the show was just too damn good in every other respect. This is down simply to good writing, involving characters, and a damn fine cast of actors firing on all cylinders.

Julianna Margulies (Alicia Florrick) is a revelation as the main character: she's very self-controlled, trying to keep her family together (she has a teenage son and daughter), trying to decide her feelings for her estranged husband and for her new boss (who is an old friend), trying to do a good job as a lawyer and beat off competition for a permanent post from a confident younger man, and more.

Josh Charles (Will Gardner) is an actor I've never come across but he's terrific as one of the (financially vulnerable) firm's three partners. Overtly charming, you're never sure if he's genuinely nice or wearinga false face. Is his interest in Alicia genuine or opportunistic. Christine Baranski (always good value) is the second partner (the third is mostly absent) and less than altruistic.

Chris Noth (Peter Florrick) is appropriately charismatic as the disgraced and imprisoned D.A. but again his motives are always suspect. Is he innocent of corruption, has he repented his liaisons with prostitutes, does he genuinely love his wife, etc?

And then as the firm's investigator Kalinda, there's Archie Panjabi an Anglo-Asian actress whom I was vaguely familiar with but can now state I think she's brilliant. And hotter than hell. Her character is intensely private, strong, cynical, with lots of contacts.

Enjoyed every minute of this 1st series of the Good Wife. Julianna Mergulies plays the role of the disgraced politician's wife to perfection. The series is a great combination of interesting legal dramas intertwined with Alicia Florrick's journey as she finds herself managing as a single mother, balancing the demands of new career with needs of her teenage children as well as the social and political pressure as former State's Attorney's wife. Can't wait for series two.

Quality drama, which succeeds on many levels. Alicia Florrick is its heart, she for so many years the dutiful wife and mother. Disgraced politician husband Peter is now in jail. Deeply hurt by his cheating, Alicia must now free herself from his shadow, take charge of her life. This means much downsizing and resuming her career as a lawyer, whilst taking care not to neglect her children Grace and Zach.

As Alicia, Julia Margulies is superb - often conveying much with barely a word or gesture. A fine cast does justice to intriguing characters. How good to see, too, more likeable teenagers than usual - Grace and Zach remarkably well adjusted in the circumstances.

Good scripts. Interesting cases. Fascinating revelations of wheeling and dealing behind the scenes - preparation of witnesses, plea bargaining, occasional dodgy practices and delaying tactics. (Adept at the latter is that wily heavily pregnant attorney, even more so after the baby arrives.) Episode 18 skilfully interweaves jury deliberations with flashbacks to the murder trial - a major surprise accompanying the verdict when reached.

23 episodes. Commentaries. Deleted scenes. On Disc 6 an excellent 75 minute feature on the making of the series. Especially stressed is that this is not THE GOOD LAWYER but THE GOOD WIFE - Alicia, her life shattered, painstakingly picking up the pieces and striving to start life anew.

Moving and fine. Apparently subsequent seasons are even better, which is good news indeed.

The series focuses on Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies), whose husband Peter Florrick (Chris Noth), a prior Illinois, State's Attorney, has been incarcerated following an infamous party-political dishonesty and sexual impropriety. After having spent the preceding thirteen years as a home-maker mother, Alicia returns to her old job as a lawyer to afford for her two kids. The series was partly inspired by real life events, as well as by other conspicuous political sex scandals in the United States, particularly those of John Edwards and former President Bill Clinton.

This is a show that has reconnoitred the connection between technology and the law, covering themes including Bitcoin, Anonymous, viral marketing in political campaigns, speech control software, cybernetic conferencing robots, and NSA surveillance. For instance, one of the firm's regular clients is an imagined internet search company known as Chumhum, which among other subjects has faced confidentiality lawsuits for peddling users' private data to the Chinese and Syrian regimes.

Good Wife is stimulating, uncommonly good in that has smarts – but is underrated in my opinion.

The Good Wife is easily one of the best shows to appear on TV in years( well I just finished the season 1 boxset; hope Season 2 is just as good; even if it's only half as good it would be still 5 stars).I didn't have high hope for this when it first started mainly because of the gimmicky premise which could have worn off, an example is the Damien Lewis show Life which fell apart after a few episodes(maybe the writers strike was to partly blame but boy was the episodes weak). The Good Wife doesn't suffer from the problems that show did with better writing to make use of the excellent cast.Gary Cole makes an apperance or two as a lovable Republican(yes, believe it or not he's not intent on plotting evil). While Alan Cumming is awesome as Eli Gold, pretty much owning every single scene he is in. One Heck of a show; a five star wonder. Must be seen.
