In some ways, the rich are no different from the rest of us: they get sick, get hurt, and need doctors to figure out what makes them ache. "Royal Pains: Season One" follows the misadventures of a doctor who finds himself at their beck and call, and it has the right mix of everything -- luxurious living in the Hamptons, weird medical crises, and a fair amount of humor.

Hank Lawson (Mark Feuerstein) is a successful young E.R. doctor in New York... until the day when a wealthy trustee dies because he focused on saving a dying teenager. Trying to distract him from his woes, his brother Evan (Paulo Costanzo) whisks him to an exclusive party in the Hamptons, at the palatial mansion of the reclusive, absurdly-wealthy Boris Rabanisch (Campbell Scott).

Then a woman nearly dies at the party, and Hank manages to save both her and Boris' treasured privacy. As a result, he soon finds himself drafted as the new concierge doctor for the wealthy Hamptons residents, along with Evan and a physician's assistant named Divya (Reshma Shetty). And his work often brings him to see Jill Casey (Jill Flint), the administrator of a local hospital.

Among the cases: breast implant disasters, an epidemic at a "bark mitzvah," a mystery shark bite, a hemophiliac teenager and his "cyberchondriac" girlfriend, and mystery ailments afflicting a senator's son, a ballerina, a horseback rider, a restauranteur, and a bestselling illustrator. Since Hank cares more about curing people than making money, he also provides care for people who can't afford the best -- but the person who needs his help the most may also be the wealthiest.

I normally can't watch medical shows -- every time I try, I develop a massive case of "medical students' disease" and end up having to go watch "Psych" instead.

I originally turned my nose up at this when my wife started watching it, tsking and pshawing at yet another unrealistic piece of US TV fluff, but I found myself strangely drawn in to each episode, peering sneakily over the top of my screen in the hope that she wouldn't notice I was actually becoming engrossed.

Okay, so the premise is somewhat ridiculous, and the secondary characters so disgustingly rich in ways that mean I automatically have to hate them, but the main characters are just so damned loveable that it is hard not to care about the trials and tribulations of HankMed.

From the goofy but endearing Evan (R. Lawson, CFO of HankMed) to the all round nice guy and medical MaGyver Hank himself, through the guest appearances by The Fonz as their dad on to the achingly lovely hospital administrator Jill (who I think I would watch happily for 45 minutes a week without any story at all - she needs to be in more stuff, and in this more too!) each one lights up the screen in their own different way.

This is unabashed, unashamed, inoffensive and whole heartedly good clean family entertainment, and I love it. Long may it continue. Beautiful people being nice to other beautiful (and rich) people - who knew that would be such a recipe for light entertainment?

Over the last few years, I have gotten hooked on the original shows on the USA Network. I really enjoy all of them. So when they've got a new show starting, I automatically give it a try. Because of that "rule," I tuned into the first season of Royal Pains, even though I am not normally a fan of medical shows. I was rewarded with a charming show with great characters.

Hank Lawson (Mark Feuerstein) is engaged to a beautiful woman and rising in a New York City hospital. That is until the day he decides to treat a poor young man with a serious medical condition instead of focusing all his time on the hospital trustee member who appears to be in stable condition. While the young man lives, the trustee takes a turn for the worse and dies, causing the hospital to fire Hank and blacklist him around the city. Hank slips into depression, causing his fiancee to break up with him, leading to further depression.

His brother Evan (Paulo Costanzo) decides that a weekend in the Hamptons is exactly what Hank needs to pull himself out of his funk. At a party the first night, Hank saves the life of a young woman, leading to an invitation to open a private medical service for the rich in the area. Evan is the first to get on board, quickly declaring himself the CFO of HankMed. Hank gets an assistant in the form of Divya Katdare (Reshma Shetty), an Indian woman whose parents don't know she has gotten a medical degree. Then there's Jill Flint (Jill Casey), the cute administrator for the local hospital. She and Hank seem to flirt as often as they fight over the best use of hospital resources.

Along the way, Hank gets some unusual cases. There's a senator's son who collapses for no apparent reason.

This is a show which those who love to have very easy casual viewing must have. Essentially the story follows a young Doctor who is forced to leave his ER position because he makes a morally right decision (IMO). He loses his fiancee and his way before his brother picks him up and starts him on a journey to find meaning in his life - as a private doctor to the rich and famous.
