This 1961 picture was a box office hit not only because of his special effects but most of all because it's great fun.
Loosly adapted from Jules Vernes Book, this picture offers one hour and a half of fantasy and entertainment that will appeal to everyone that's young at heart.
With a classic Bernard Herman score, great color photography and sequences like the one of the giant Crab this is truly a classic 60ths adventure film!

Any fan of Ray Harryhausen should have this DVD in their collection. Although probably overshadowed by his other films like "Jason and the argonauts" and therefore not as well know, "Mysterious Island" offers the viewer with more excellent special effects - especially as it was filmed in colour. Ray Harryhausen brings to life a giant crab ,a pre-historic bird and bees in this Jules Verne story. The final part of the film is excellent where the shipwrecked survivors dressed in bizarre diving equipment help Captain Nemo destroy a giant gastropod kind of monster and try and save the "Nautilus" submarine. Great fun!!! - They dont make Sci fi / fantasy like this anymore - sadly its all computer generated images now. Ray Harryhausen's models were the best. There is a very interesting extra on the DVD all about Ray Harryhausen's life and films over the years which is narrated by Leonard Nimoy - of "StarTrek" fame.

Somebody at a pub quiz i attended once thought Captain Nemo invented the Aqua-lung which made me laugh .All very funny but what has this got to do with the 1961 film Mysterious Island? Based on a Jules Verne story , itself a follow up to his other books 20,000 Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea & In Search of the Castaways: The Children of Captain Grant (Forgotten Books) Mysterious Island has a significant cameo for Captain Nemo( given considerable gravitas by Herbert Lom ) who is portrayed as a zealous humanist though not without uncompromising homicidal tendencies -an oxymoron i suppose.
The film starts with Union soldiers escaping from a Confederate prison camp in a hot air balloon . A violent storm propels them way out to sea where the balloon crashes and the group - Captain Cyrus Harding ( Michael Craig ) ,Corporal Neb Nugent ( Dan Jackson) Sergeant Pencroft( Percy Herbert) Gideon Spillit(Gary Merrill) are washed up on a seemingly deserted island.( the island scenes were shot in Spain , the rest in England) As luck would have it the same storm has also made castaways of Lady Mary Fairchild(Joan Greenwood) and her niece Elena ( Beth Rogan) so the group set about trying to survive until they can either escape or are rescued.
Surviving to do either will be difficult though because as well as being attacked by a giant crab, a giant bird ( regularly mistaken for a chicken but special effects guru Ray Harryhausen based it on a prehistoric bird ) encountering gigantic bees the group also run into marauding Pirates.

This was fun to see again after so many years, but it was not as action-packed or as filled with the many wonderful Harryhausen creations as many of his other films.
If you are hoping for a Clash of The Titans-type of experience, this will disappoint you. An extra feature though that I highly recommend (worth the purchase price alone) is The Harryhausen Chronicles, a well researched and put together documentary on the interesting life of Ray Harryhausen, and the stories behind some of his creations. He seems to be such a nice, humble man, judging by this.Really a top quality extra feature.

Mysterious Island is a loose adaptation of Jules Verne's novel of the same name. It's out of Columbia Pictures and was filmed at Shepperton Studios in England with exteriors on the coast of Spain. Directed by Cy Endfield, with Ray Harryhausen working his stop motion genius for the creatures, it stars Michael Craig, Joan Greenwood, Michael Callan, Gary Merrill, Herbert Lom, Beth Rogan, Percy Herbert & Dan Jackson. Bernard Herrmann provides the score. The plot sees three Union soldiers escaping in a gas balloon from a Confederate prison camp during the American Civil War. Also caught up in the escape is a Confederate rebel and a newspaperman. As they battle the elements they are forced to crash land on some island they think is in the Pacific. Here they encounter giant animals that threaten their survival. Soon two ladies are shipwrecked onto the island too, but the strange animals are not the only thing to worry about, the island volcano is close to eruption and they appear to not be the only humans on the island?

Tho something of a lesser light in the pantheon of fantasy adventure films, Mysterious Island, in spite of its flaws, is rather good fun. Dramatically it's OK, with the creatures particularly memorable, but those in search of a science story befitting Jules Verne are in for a let down (tho some small science interest does come in the last quarter). This is an out and out desert island survival movie with some Harryhausen kickers. There's a nice group dynamic as soldiers from opposing sides are forced to come together to survive. While the arrival of "posh stock" ladies throws up a class distinction issue, that is nice, if not fully exploited.
