I love this movie!! It's got something for everyone! I am not a big fan of either Michael Douglas or Melanie Griffith, but they are perfect for the roles they play in this movie. I couldn't imagine any other actors in the same part.
For the romantics, there's the love story between Griffith and Douglas. For the war buffs, there's tons of WWII movie reels and actual footage of the war. For the people who like lots of action, there's plenty of that- planes, bombs, shooting, spying, chasing, suspense etc.... It's a great date movie because the ramance is balanced with action.
I am so glad this movie in finally available on DVD. I would recommend it to anyone looking for some different to watch.

I found this movie on a TV channel a few years ago and really enjoyed it. It's good to own the DVD now, which also has a couple of extras...including a small featurette.
On first appearances, yes, it looks very "budget movie", with dodgy sets, dodgy script, shakey acting in places and a wobbly storyline...BUT it is STILL a good movie to watch.
It has all the elements of undercover intelligence within Germany in WW2, with a light love story over the top of it. Add into the equation that Griffiths' character is also half-Jewish, it gives a little more grit to the story. Particular good points include Joely Richardson's performance; as good a woman semi-villain as you'll get anywhere. A good strong performance by Liam Neeson as a German General and also the fact John Gielgud plays a small part gives the movie some credit too.
It's a very simple story, slightly predictable, but you'll find the movie much better and more enjoyable than you think.

Lovely film! WWII spy thriller/love story. If you love 1940s nostalgia and music you will love this film. Melanie Griffiths brilliantly portrays a spy who goes undercover as a housekeeper/nanny in a German household. When she's compromised and the net closes in, lover and boss, Michael Douglas rescues her to get her out of Germany.

This is one of my all time favourite movies. Three of my favourtie actors. Love Michael and Melanie together. Wouldn't be the same without Liam Neeson too. The clarity of this dvd is spectular. Time to put my old vhs version in the bin!! I have once more seen everything so clearly. The colour is great. Love, love, love it.

This is a fantastic film and the two leads share a certain amount of on-screen chemistry. There is also a good performance from Liam Neeson as a german official but the plot of the film is slow and pretty predictable. However, the film works well in it's attempt to tell a story. Worth watching but don't get excited.

I knew I liked this from long ago viewings, and I found it by chance browsing through Amazon. What I had really forgotten is just how good this film is. First a splendid Scope transfer (2.35:1), excellent picture and sound, with Scene Access, Subtitles, trailer and "Featurette" (which I haven't seen). This is a big budget film with no expense spared. Scenes at stations and marches and bombing raids almost take your breath away. The story is good-Griffith, who I normally don't like, but here is marvellous even if she does mumble a bit, plays a half German Jewish/Irish girl in America who wants to help somehow in the war (WW2) Speaking fluent German she gets a job translating for Douglas's business man, only he turns out to be an important Spy and she, in love with him, joins the Secret Service. From here we go to Germany and the spying really starts. There is tension galore, excitement and touching human relationships. Joelly Richardson is great as the German woman who helps her, and Neeson is the high ranking officer she spies on. I just love this film, and can't quite understand how it seems to have slipped under the radar when it comes to talking about good Spy thrillers. The price is very good too. Highly recomended.

Clever war time espionage love story mix. Watched it many years ago and found it recently and could not resist buying it. Made the family sit down together over Christmas and watch it and they loved it, particularly my 17 year old daughter, who watched the latter part through the gaps in her fingers as she got so engrossed in the story line. Great actors bring it all together brilliantly.
