A superb epitomisation of great British wit, sarcasm and farce. One is never sure whether to laugh at Basil or to feel embarassed for him. The episode with the Irish builder will have even the most humourless of people in tears of laughter. A must buy for anyone with a sense of humour and a perfect introduction for those that haven't. Comedy does not get better.

Comedy like this could not be made today, in the days of political correctness.

Now there are some famous episodes in the series where this is very true, The Germans for example. But although the comments made by Basil and the Major may be have ended up in the out takes bin if the series were made today, the real joke is actually at the expense of these characters for their ignorance.

The relationship between Basil and Cybil, providing the husband and wife gags has a touch of the Les Dawson's about it.

This has stood the test of time, it's frantic, funny, even if by today's standards unsubtle.

Maybe this is a coincidence (not likely), but several people I know own this DVD (including myself) and on every one the final three episodes DO NOT PLAY! There is some kind of fault with the menu screen and when you select "The Hotel Inspectors", "Gourmet Night" or "The Germans", the opening music plays but nothing else comes up. Add to that a complete lack of extrras and second rate presentation, I simply cannot say anything positive about it! Of course the show itself is great but unless you want to waste your money on three episodes, get the boxset with everything on.
COMPLETE RIP-OFF, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

I am a huge fan of this TV show. Although I wanted to say that this dvd does not have any extras. I brought it and was dispointed that it didn't have any.

I would like to second the reviewer who said the final three episodes on this DVD would not play. I wish I had read that before. I ordered the DVD, final three would not play. So I got it replaced by Amazon. Guess what? Final three would not play on that DVD also. What a nuisance having to send it back and wait forever for a refund. Beware of this DVD!

This comedy may have only had 12 episodes in total but fawlty towers is legendary in the bbc comedy's. Series 1 has 6 episodes ,a touch of class were basil fawlty is his usual rude self with the lower class of his guests and a so called lord who enters the hotel gets basil practically on his hands and knees until basil finds out the truth about him and then chaos begins.

The builders ,in this episode everything goes wrong when basil and his wife leave the hotel for a while and manuel his spanish waiter with no sense of english is left in charge of the building plans for inside the hotel ,basil returns and goes frantic thinking what his vicious wife will do to him when she returns.

The wedding party ,everything just goes wrong for basil from getting the wrong ideas about certain things to getting shown up.

The hotel inspectors ,This is one of the funniest episodes where a mr hutchison enters the hotel and demands perfect service from basil ,will he get it not if basil has anything to say about it.

Gourmet night ,a drunk chef and posh people coming to the hotel for a special night adds up to one thing disaster and basil has to think quick ,just a pity his car wasn't quick as it always breaks down at the wrong time leaving basil in a hilarious rage.

The germans ,when basils wife's in hospitial he thinks nothing can go wrong in the hotel when he's by himself ,that is until he gets the constant irritating phone calls from his wife reminding him to do things hes already doing ,and the stressful fire drill where hes trying to explain about the fire drill to his not so clever guests ,all ends in disaster for the stressful basil fawlty.

Aside from it being incredibly funny, the scripting is worth at least a thesis. The compact irony, the depth and strength in which it deals with the (our) prejudices and obviously the brilliant acting makes Fawlty Towers a must for any lover of good comedy. The powerful combination of a male and female scriptwriters' duo turns this series into something rather special. I have "forced" my German friends to watch the Episode of "The Germans" over and over again. After which they all went out to buy the video :-).
