This show was aired for one 'season' on CBS, across the pond. However, CBS pulled it, citing poor ratings.

The fans stepped-in, creating a media storm. An online petition gathered over 107,000 signatures, newspapers featured articles and 20 tons, yes tons of peanuts were sent to CBS' offices.

Within a few weeks this show was un-cancelled, something incredibly-rare in America.

As of now, CBS has purchased 7 episodes, to be broadcast sometime next year. More are promised if ratings improve. You bet your a** they will, CBS.

Now, to the plot. Jericho is a small rural Kansas town. Jerico is left paralysed after a series of nuclear attacks on the main US cities. Soon after an EMP attack knocks-out communications.

This might not sound like much of a basis for a show, but it works. It grips you right from episode 1 and doesn't let up.

I've already pre-ordered this. I urge you all to do the same.

We all know that American TV can be just awful sometimes, but we also know that it can be the best in the world. There's the fantastic '24', 'NCIS', the re-make of 'Battlestar Galactica', etc, all brilliant and compulsive watching, now we have to add another title to the list 'Jericho'. This is a drama that many would have missed, it only lasted a season and a half, the plug was pulled by - yes you've guessed it- those TV executives who did'nt like the low viewer ratings it was getting, but it is a superb piece of TV. It tells the story of a small town in middle America and what happens to it and it's population when atomic bombs suddenly explode on major American cities without warning one dark and dramatic day. Is it terrorists? Is America suddenly at war with another country? Has something gone tragically wrong? With no communication to the outside world Jericho starts to break down, as do it's townsfolk, as everyone tries to survive. All the main characters have secrets, some more closer to what has happened than others know, but all will do anything to survive. It's very gripping stuff, and the acting from all the main characters is superb, there are twists and turns aplenty, and it is an emotional rollercoaster all the way. I found myself watching a few episodes at a time, simply because I wanted to know what happened next!! Trust me if you purchase this you won't be disappointed, except for the fact that the series was cut short.

This is a fantastic piece of television and looks with real honesty at what would happen to a western country if it were subject to a sweeping nuclear attack. That is to say, there would be barely contained chaos held in check by the efforts of good people, which is exactly what Jericho is about.

The story is well written with characters that you really come to care about. That the producers decided to cancel it after only one season is a clear demonstration that television producers now are only interested in maintaining established (and stagnant) shows rather than investing in new material.

This production was made with a particular audience in mind I suggest and it isn't for the fans of series such as Banshee - HBO Season 1 [DVD] [2013] or The Spartacus Collection (Gods of the Arena, Blood and Sand, Vengeance) [DVD] in my view.

Jericho is very sanitised, with most of the violence that takes place happening off camera---this is not late night viewing but prime-time,family drama of a harrowing event that in the hands of a different director(like Danny Boyle for example)and in an alternative TV slot would be portrayed much more realistically.

But,hey,I'm not reviewing the terribly nihilisticThe Road [DVD] or the Mad Max series of films; this is neatly produced, the actors are mainly pretty and clean and have several romances playing throughout, and the bad guys are not disgustingly bad.

I can see why this 1st season generated so much interest that the fans campaigned for a 2nd season and some kind of resolution to the story.

I did buy the short season 2 to see how things panned out---it interested me enough to do so.

While this series has many faults, including some drawn out love triangles, it works extremely well in several areas. The acting, despite what one reviewer has said, is first class, particularly Lennie James (whom I last saw in the wonderful Granada series "Cold Feet - The Complete Collection of ColdFeet [DVD]") as the enigmatic Hawkins and Alicia Coppolla as the stranded urbanite. She develops this character so well. Secondly, the arc of the story is very well executed and the trickling in of news and contacts from outside the town is perfectly pitched to raise the tension with each episode. Thirdly, it does tackle some serious issues and makes you think - particularly the growing relationship between the political process and basic survival.

Overall, a wonderful gem of a series. Yes, it could've worked better with the HBO treatment perhaps, but given the confines of a network TV show very, very enjoyable. It beats the pants of the3 the overrated "Lost" any day!
