The Iron Giant 1999 Subtitles

There is no doubt in my mind that The Iron Giant is one of the most underated films ever made. It is such a shame that Warner Bros. did not have the confidence to invest more than they did (which was hardly anyhing!) in promoting this film. This is brought to light further in the special edition DVD version of the film, during the special features interviews, in which Brad Bird explains there were additional scenes he would liked to have included, but due to budget constraints could not.
It is such an unusual story, of a small boy and an enormous robot, that somehow highlight the feelings of friendship and loyalty in a fashion no other animated story has managed to do.
A real heartwarming tale with great heroes, a cunning villian, wonderful humour and plenty of action. Highly recommended viewing for both adults and children alike, making it a fantastic family film.

I've just finished my first viewing of this DVD and I'm staggered. This is a brilliant piece of work that satisfies at many levels. It looks gorgeous; the animation quality is spot on and some of the lighting effects are eerily good. The humour running through the script and visuals is subtle and rarely (if ever) too in your face. The characterisation is marvellous too, especially the metal giant itself and the emotional engagement (even for a jaded 37 year old like myself) is ridiculously effective. If the final scenes don't make you feel better about life then you ain't got no soul brother!
This is up there with 'Toy Story' as the finest animated movie ever made and probably one of the finest movies of any kind. I will be spreading the word because this has been criminally under exposed. See it NOW!

This film was released in 1999, by Warner Bros animation. It features many famous voices, some of which are unrecogniseable in the film. For example, Jennifer Aniston does the voice of the boy's mom, but I didn' t realise it was her until the end credits. Also Vin Diesel plays the robot, but trust me, you would never guess he was him, because most of the dialogue is rusty clanking and screeching. Nothing new there then!

The story focuses on a young boy called Hogarth, who is 11 years old. He lives with his mom in the town of Rockwell, Maine, a quiet town where nothing much happens. All this changes when the townsfolk report sightings of a large alien creature. Many dismiss these reports, but they are taken seriously by Kent Mansley, a slimy goverment agent who is out to find and destroy the creature.

Hogarth finds the giant robot after hearing noises one night and following a trail of destruction through the forest. He soon befriends the robot, who is a gentle giant, and will the help of Dean, a beatnik artist who works at the scrapyard, seeks to hide his new friend from the evil Kent, who is snooping ever closer...

This is a really exciting and touching movie which highlights the intolerance and prejudice of people. Humans are out to destroy what they don't understand, rather than reaching out. The animation is superb, especially, the showdown at the end of the movie. The film leaves us guessing what the robot actually is- is he an alien from outer space, or a military experiment? This is an intelligent kids movie which will have you thinking about it after it has finished.

The voice cast are:

Eli Marienthal: Hogarth Hughes:

The protagonist. An 11 year old boy trying to make sense of the world.

Before he went to Pixar to do THE INCREDIBLES (2004), Brad Bird co-wrote and directed one of the best animated films of the 1990's - THE IRON GIANT (1999). But sadly, this wonderful film was a failure at the box-office. Why? Because Warner Bros. gave the film no marketing (no TV spots and very few ads in newspapers and magazines). But the film critics loved it and it has fared much better on VHS & DVD sales. And hopefully, thanks to the success of THE INCREDIBLES, more people will watch THE IRON GIANT.

This film is a big step from the 2-D animated Disney films of the late-1990's. There's no romantic sub-plots, no talking creatures voiced by a-list celebrities and best of all, no cring-worthy songs that tries to become an Oscar contender. THE IRON GIANT is a touching and heartwarming film about a lonely boy who befriends a giant iron robot from outer space.

If you've read this review, please buy THE IRON GIANT on DVD and watch it with all of your family. It's a modern classic.

This is a wonderful movie. It has a real meaty story that unwinds at a far gentler pace than many other animated movies but the overall result (especially after repeated viewings) is far more satisfying. If you love animation, don't miss this.

In this age of hi-tech super CG wizardy, we run a high risk of missing the point of the whole project. The Iron Giant does not fall prey to this. Inspired by the Ted Hughes story (read to me when I was a child, and still prominent in my memory!), there are some major deviations(no dragon, instead symbolically represented by a Nuclear missile)...but this is an animation...not a book, and the fullness of the screenplay and character development justifies the changes made. This is a beautiful story, well directed, voice-cast and animated. It looks fantastic, maintaining the cell-painted 2d look with the 3d CG elements, and chooses to play to the story rather than 'sell out' to the cliche gags or special effects (DreamWorks, take note...although I do love your stuff too!!!!!).
