High Performance, High Definition recording!

At the heart of the HD PVR 2 GE Plus is a pro quality H.264 high-definition encoder that was originally designed for the broadcast TV industry. Hauppauge's HD PVR 2 GE Plus is built-in for high-performance, high-quality TV recordings at up to 1080p resolution.

The HD PVR 2 GE Plus records in the AVCHD format, which is the format used to master Blu-ray discs. You have the option of recording at data rates from 1 Mbs to 13.5Mbs, so you can choose the video quality you need.

Hardware streaming means that all the processing is done on the HD PVR 2 and not on your PC during your gameplay, this allows your PC to carry on with regular tasks without lag of performance resulting in deterioration of the Live stream. (Please check your internet connection can handle the upload bandwidth required for streaming. For further information contact your local Hauppauge advisor)

HD PVR 2 GE Plus offers multiple H.264 recording formats, you can choose when recording a video:
  • .TS, which is a generic 'transport stream' compatible with many digital media players
  • .M2TS, which is compatible with the Sony Playstation3
  • .MP4, which is compatible with the XBox360

MP4 files are used with many video editors, like Sony Vegas, for editing. TS files are also called 'AVCHD' files and are used to burn Blu-ray DVD movies (Blu-ray burner software not included).

Style Name: HD PVR- HD Video Capture Device Verified Purchase
I bought this item so that I could transfer VHS films into the computer for editing and burning onto DVD, also for capturing clips from BluRay discs. Every review I've read here talks about connecting games consoles to the device and although I realise that it is marketed for this purpose, I didn't see why it shouldn't work with any video source as an input (why do people want to record their gaming experiences anyway? Seems odd to me).
Having read from many reviews that you just 'plug in and go' that's exactly what I did and - nothing. The component video input produced a blank screen on the computer. As a result I tried connecting with s-video leads and did get a picture but the quality was poor (which I expected). Having decided it was not good enough I had a think about it and reconnected the component leads but could still not get any signal.
Eventually after a couple of hours I had a delve into the settings on my Blu-ray player. I found that I could choose the kind of signal to be produced at the component output. I hadn't looked at this before because there was no need, everything else being connected via the elegant, efficient and easy HDMI sockets. As soon as I switched the component output from the default YPbPr to RGB I had a perfect, HiDef Blu-ray quality picture on my computer screen.
The Hauppauge appears to be a nice piece of kit but suffers from the affliction that so many electronic devices do, the unbelievably poor instruction manual, or in this case instruction 'sheet-of-paper'. Another example is the on-screen menu choice to record your video capture. You can choose between Playstation, AVCHD, or XBox. All this choice does is to determine the format of the recorded video, either .m2ts .ts or .mp4 formats.

Style Name: HD PVR Rocket - USB powered, portable, 1080p Game Capture device Verified Purchase
UPDATE October 2015 - For those who are having difficulty setting this up to record from their TV, I have added instructions below this review...

I bought this unit for one main purpose - to copy from my SkyHD box to my computer for watching television at double the speed. I was a little hesitant at first when purchasing this unit as I was unsure if it would be suitable for my needs. I needn't have worried. After just about 10 minutes I was up and running, recording straight to a memory stick from my SkyHD box using the RCA cables.

I have since purchased an HDMI splitter to be able to record from my box using HD, the unit is usually listed on this product page under "Customer's also bought....".

I've yet to discover any faults with this unit. Once the input and memory stick are connected, the unit is ready to record. One touch of the big red button on top starts recording, and one touch of the big red button on top stops recording. It cannot be any easier than that! Recordings can then be transferred from the memory stick to the computer, providing me with the ability to watch them faster using VLC Media Player.

You can also record to the computer using this unit. The big red button doesn't work when recording to the computer, but with the right software it can be easily used. Windows users can use the free Hauppauge software, but Mac users, such as myself, will need to have a look around for alternatives. I use software called HDPVR Capture. It's not free, but it's fairly cheap for what it does.

The quality of the recordings are superb in full HD, and also not too shabby at the very lowest setting of 700mbps. The maximum setting is 18000mbps, and when recording using HD from an HD source the picture is just outstanding on my Mac screen.

Style Name: HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition HDMI Capture Verified Purchase
Purchased this item so that I could record gameplay from my Xbox 360 in HD.

Quality of the recorded footage is superb, recording in 1080p at 29.97fps. The audio is also high quality and I can't fault it at all.

It is very easy to set up, the installation CD contains drivers for all Windows OS (including NT) and will have you set up in minutes.

The only complains I have are that the box can get quite warm (unavoidable) and that when not connected via USB (or the power outage on the USB changes) then it no longer passes through the HDMI signal (this causes my Xbox to reset). But this is no major factor considering my laptop is always on anyway.

The 2 HDMI cables received are also of high quality and much appreciated, a PS3 cable was received and unneeded by me, but still appears to be quality.

+ High quality recording
+ Easy to use
+ Works with both Xbox/PS3 and comes with both cable sets
- Needs usb to be connected to function (if console running through it all the time)

Style Name: HD PVR Gaming Edition
I've had my Hauppauge HD-PVR Gaming Edition for about 5 months now. It is fantastic and it does exactly what you need it to do.

In the box is the PVR and some cables along with the instructions.
The PVR looks cool, and when you're recording it has a awesome green light.

Setting up the PVR is simple. All the wires you need come with it. First I connected the PVR to my TV using the component cables, and then I connected it to my PS3 easily using the cables provided. Then you set your PS3 to the right mode and connect the PVR to your PC with the USB cable provided and your pretty much done. You install the software provided and you click capture and it captures whatever is on the TV screen.

The software isn't amazing though. I expected much better, but it gets the job done. I run it on my laptop (A notsogood laptop) and it works fine. The software has a built in YouTube uploader where you can login to your YouTube account and upload from there. I don't use this option because it usually doesn't upload in HD when I do it that way, but doing it manually works fine.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to record their Xbox or PS3 footage, it does what it says it does. Simple.

If you want to see what the quality is like, just search 'mw3 how to search and destroy jazszzz' and my video will show up. Thanks!
