Having bought a Humax Foxsat for one room, I was curious to see if the Grundig unit would be better and so bought one for the bedroom.

It was returned because of the following perceived shortcomings:

Fan noise - the FoxSat has no fan - so it is MUCH quieter, essential in a bedroom.
The Remote control is probably a bit simpler to use but cannot be programmed to operate the TV as well so you have to have two remotes on the bed.
There is no programme 'search listings' facility meaning that programming recording schedules is more tedious.
It may have been the set I bought but, when switching to SBY, the fan just kept running and so the machine has to be switched off at the plug to silence it.

Overall it is a simpler format and interface with less functionality than the Foxsat which still seems to set the standard for these machines. Considering that it is only �50-odd cheaper than the Humax, I would consider it much inferior in value for money.

Hope this helps in your browsing. I wish someone had provided this info beforehand which would have saved me the time and effort of the return.

There are very few reviews on the Grundig Freesat pvr but there was one good one from a a technical views website which said the picture is crystal clear, great sound, and very easy to operate. It never mentioned the noisy fan.

However, on this basis I decided to purchase one because I was really fed up with the Humax Freesat box where the remote only worked occasionally, even up close to the box, and I was getting through a set of batteries every day. I also found it very user unfriendly (the instruction manual next to useless)and the picture and sound were very inferior compared with the Grundig.

True, the Grundig box is a little noisy with the fan but it doesn't trouble me because I have my box on a shelf behind the wall the TV is mounted on.

I have SkyHD setup at home and I wanted a Freesat (SKY+) type recorder for my holiday home. The Grundig unit seemed to fit the bill exactly. It does exactly what it says on the box. Records faultlessly scrolls down programs records 2 at once etc. in fact everything Sky+hd does BUT in a slightly different way to sky menu wise. Read the screen and follow the instructions there is no problem.

The noisey fan, yes but not terrible bad it has an external power supply so the fan cools the inner electronics. When you switch to standby the fan continues to run UNTIL all is cool and THEN turns off. This is how it works.

Would I buy again. Yes in fact I am thinking of changing one of my SkyHD boxes to one of these. It is FREESAT so no monthly charges and picture quality is excellent. It also locks in the signal much better than the Sky system.

Overall an excellent piece of kit at a reasonable price. The only change I would like is the Power unit built in to the receiver.
