Absoloute failure on PC. PC IS NOT A CONSOLE!, 15 Nov 2009
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PC DVD) (DVD-ROM)
This is an absoloute failure of a game.
The COD games are bought pretty much for their multiplayer content. The single player games are okay - but they are usually complete in less than a week which is not good for the normal RRP - MW2 seemed to trigger a price war which meant its RRP dropped but thats besides the point.
Single player verdict - yeah its okay. The computer AI isnt bad, but still anyone who has above noob skills can complete it on hardened at least within a few days. The storyline isnt too bad. For a PC title however it feels too "Arcade" like. You can take multiple hits without dying, there is no leaning around corners like in COD4 and some of the added things like calling in harriers, using sentry guns etc make for an initial "oh, thats nice" but then it ends up being just plain annoying. This part is even more annoying in multiplayer.
The multiplayer side.. where to start. Absoloute failure.
Activision - the PC is not a console (surprise!) - people who play games on PC`s have spent hundreds of pounds modifying and building their PC`s specs up. They do not want to be restricted to the types of rubbish you give console users. If we wanted to play this on a console we would buy the actual console which is usually less than the price of a decent graphics card anyways.
The PC multiplayer has no dedicated servers - what this means is that multiplayer is riddled with problems. Games close, randomly. There is usually excessive lag within the game and the host, whoever the game decides to let host the match, tends to have an advantage as they get a better ping. It isnt a huge advantage, but its more than enough. Compare this to the likes of COD4 or BF2142 where dedicated servers are in place and you get a feel for how shoddy this no-dedicated server feature of MW2 is. Games take a long time to set up, often resulting in being unable to find a game, and if your trying to play with more than 1 other friend, forget it. Your party is often disbanded resulting in having to quit out and reinvite them.
The PC multiplayer also has a maximum player limit similar to the consoles. On the currently unlocked maps it supports 18, 9 per side. This simply is not enough when you take into consideration other online FPS support many more players. COD4 and BF2142 each support up to 64, and older games such as planetside support hundreds of players at a time. To suddenly be restricted to 18 players is like your broadband company turning round to you and saying "hi, heres your new 56k line, were taking the broadband back". Completely rediculous.
So when you finally find a game, that is stable, and the host has been migrated a few times to clear up some of the lag, and your running around a huge map looking for 1 of the 9 enemy players.. its not too bad, but then games last maybe 5 - 10 minutes max and the pain starts all over again.
As for the actual multiplayer.. theres so much stuff to die from its really quite stupid. All the little perks are interesting, but its too arcade like - again if this is what you want buy it on a console. You end up with people just spamming frags all over the place and calling in gunships and harriers - theyre easy enough to take out but this is a FPS where you are aiming to shoot the enemy soldiers, not just sit there with a rocket launcher playing blow up the harrier.
If you want a semi realistic FPS with a fun multiplayer then go for bf2142, cod4, or the likes of operation flashpoint 2.
Activision has taken advantage of the hype and the fact that COD4 was decent on the pc - they knew people would go out and buy it regardless as the community trusts them to deliver the goods based on experiences from COD4 - they have somehow managed to screw up most aspects of what made COD4 a great game within MW2. Literally everyone I have spoken to who bought this on PC is very very dissapointed - and its almost exclusvely due to the poor multiplayer aspect.

Not so good..., 30 Nov 2009
Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PC DVD) (DVD-ROM)
Modern Warfare 2 will be very familiar for those who played the original Modern Warfare...and that's because the game hasn't moved on much, and, in fact, gotten worse...
The first person story game is okay, I'll play it once...but the on-line multi-player experience is terrible.
Gone are the dedicated servers, the quick game joins, the glorious 40 player games, the occasional cheat (because the server admin kicked him and his winging mate...
All replaced with peer to peer hosting (read: laggy), automatic (read: poor) player matching, the maximum 18 player (9v9) games, and the occasional honest player, who, like you, has stumbled into a bot v. bot battle of the cheat...
I am now praying to the God of Honest Players that a dedicated server will be released, along with stronger anti-cheat measures, so that this emptiness I feel will go away....
But they have my money now...I don't think I'll ever feel as if it wasn't conned out of my pocket...

Finished With it... lag perk unlocked!, 13 Nov 2009
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PC DVD) (DVD-ROM)
First of i want to say that i really thought the single player part of the game was very impressive. The story line and gameplay i give it 5 stars gladly. I enjoyed it from start to finish.
However the single player is only a small part of what i wanted as i have been playing online games for years now, Sadly as much i really wanted to like this game the new IWNET system where the game is hosted on players home PC's it a terrible failure. At the moment i have reached level 42 so have have some experience of it.
The problem is lag about 50% of games i played the connection either fails totally or you get host migrated to another players PC,When waiting in the lobby for a game to start it drops the connection when it cannot connect to the host and you start over, Insead of using a server browser and popping onto a dedicated one where all your mates hang out. This lag and constant interuptions has ruined the gameplay for me. I am on an 8 meg line and when i play other games on properly run dedicated server this is not a issue as it happens very rarely.
The final tipping point came today is when the Aimbotters turned up, And with killcam there is no dispute when you see it snap to the players head and delivers a perfect shot every time, And since this is IWNET using valve anti cheat there are no Server admins to kick/ban them.
Why The developers thought IWNET and Valve anti cheat would fair any better than previous games is a mystery, Anybody who has played counter strike that uses VAC will know that Server admins where always kicking ainbotters/speedhackers etc because VAC couldent, So the reason for this i must assume is is cost related but in the history of online gaming there are always 2 constants. The first is that the game will always be pirated and the second is that the hackers will always find a way around the security. And while the game is hosted on your own PC i am concerned that it may allow attemts to get into your PC for malicious reasons.
For the record i was one of the people who voiced concerns regarding dedicated servers but i gave it a try and the gaming community was correct, On paper i am sure IWNET is a great idea but in reality you cant beat a dedicated server where you can make new friends and a decent admin.
