5.0 out of 5 stars Windows 7 Professional 32 bit, worth every penny, 30 Aug 2009
First off let me explain something, as a fulltime student studying a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, my University pays for a service from Microsoft which allows us to have access to new software before anyone else.

I am currently using Windows 7 Professional 32 bit, full version. This is the final retail version as it will be shipped and to date I have had no major issues with the software whatsoever.

The Operating System runs smoothly, looks a lot cleaner and clearer than previous versions of Windows that I have used. I tried Vista but found it too unstable for my liking. I have performed a clean install on my Laptop and I am very pleased with the hardware support it provides.

My Laptop has 2gb RAM, 256mb nVidia GeForce Go 7400 and 1.83Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. The feature of Windows 7 that stands out the most to me is the excellent multiple monitor support. Firstly my graphics card is non standard and requires Windows Update recommended drivers which are not Official drivers from nVidia but work perfectly. When I had originally tried Windows Vista I had no dual screen support and due to driver issues I was frequently presented with Blue Screens, as for Windows 7 to date I have been using it for over a week now and it hasn't failed yet.

My Graphics card was the only peice of hardware that required a driver download the rest including a 15 in 1 Card reader, Connexant HD Audio, Gigabit Ethernet NIC, Intel PROSet Wireless all worked perfectly on first boot.

In terms of software compatibility I have come across no errors or issues yet, I run Office 2007 for office stuff, Windows Live Messenger for chat, Firefox 3.5 for the internet [Internet Explorer is present I choose not to use it and it seems to be fine with that decision] I also use a number of development environments including Visual Studio 2008 Professional and Macromedia Flash 8 Professional - all software runs fine, however flash studio temporarily disables Aero while open but re-enables it once closed]

In conclusion, although I got my copy free I am only licensed to install it on one PC which I have done, however I am planning on buying a new PC in a few months time and if it does not come with Windows 7 preinstalled I will buy it off the shelf as I am entirely satisfied in saying this product is worth every penny.

4.0 out of 5 stars So far so good, 28 Oct 2009
By Daniel Murphy (Leamington, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I finally recieved my copy yesterday after a long 3 month wait and gleefully dived into installing it. Thankfully I was smart enough to already have backed up everything i wanted to keep on a portable HDD so I didnt have to worry about that.

Installation is paaaainfully easy. just litterally 3 clicks and the installation will begin; Then its just a matter of waiting. Once I did all that and windows was up and running the system imediatly tries and locates drivers for you, saving much agro in trying to find them yourself. Sadly for some reason, while it did find my GFX card drivers, it just wouldnt install them but a quick DL from the Nvidia site soon solved that.

After getting everything i thought i needed up I did a reboot and thats then my only major problem occured. Whenever it tried booting wondows the system would just blue screen and then reboot again. After doing some scans it was telling me that there was a patch causing the problem. Unfortunately there was no way for me to remove the patch so I had to go through the whole install procedure again, not fun.

From what I can tell it was likely the old Antivirus software i reinstalled as it did throw up an alert about compatibility when i installed it first time. So just a note to those adding old software on. Create system restore points so if it DOES go bad, you can revert to an older version without having to reinstall the whole thing.

In terms of the OS itself it is very nice. It definately uses more resources then XP to run but nothing major and it runs nice and smoothly. Also other then my antivirus I havent had any issues with compatibility or missing drivers, everything is working a treat. Well worth the wait and not tonight I can really have a play round with it and see what new toys it has 8D

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product at a great price, 15 July 2009
By J. Webb (Swindon, UK) - See all my reviews

At first I was a little unsure. Amongst the forums I frequent there has been a lot of buzz over Windows 7; but having seen many failed attempts by Microsoft in the past (having grown up using MS DOS) I was more than a little dubious.

However, after using the release candidate for a month now I can say I was being dubious over nothing.

The interface is very clean and simple, with many of the "errors" of Vista having been corrected. There are a few items which are now harder to find, but these almost don't matter in comparison to the positive changes Microsoft have made. An example is user account control. Now I typically would turn this off in Vista, simply because the prompts are too intrusive and frequent, and turning it off is not really a good idea in terms of security. Well in windows 7 you have more control over how frequently it alerts you of things. However, I have not changed this at all, as it now appears it is more "intelligent", and even leaving it at "out of the box" setup, it provides just the right level of prompts.

If you can afford this, then I'd highly recommend it. Especially if you manage to grab a copy whilst Microsoft are offering it at half price. Be warned though, that due to recent legislation changes in Europe, this version will not come with Internet Explorer (or any web browser). Make sure you download your chosen browser before upgrading your existing operating system.
