4.0 out of 5 stars It's hard to be a father, 14 Sep 2000
By Graeme Creffield (Herts, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Before reading this book, it might be helpful to visit the Assyrian lion-hunt bas-reliefs in the British Museum!

This is not an easy read. The style is often dense and poetic, and the story is underpinned by complex symbolism. There is frequent repetition of tropes and phrases, giving the novel something of the flavour of a fairy tale. Just like a fairy tale, it is timeless and placeless. It aspires to universality. The occasional joky, contemporary references are in this context slightly jarring. They are too specific.

However, it is worth persisting for what Hoban has to say about relationships. Relationships at various levels - love, marriage, the purely physical - between men and women are one of the key motifs of the book. The core of the work, however, is its analysis of fatherhood and father-child relationships. The central, eponymous characters have to learn to put the past to rest so that they can move into the future. They have to recognise that people should not be forced to jump into a particular suit of clothes - to use a repeating image of the novel - but should be allowed to develop as they want; they should be accepted for what they are rather than for what you would like them to be.

3.0 out of 5 stars Truffles or Tripe?, 24 July 2001
Half way through this book I paused to take stock. I decided that I was lost without a bearing to understand where I was, or a map to understand where I'd been. Rather than give up, I persevered, and started again. I'm glad I did. I was able to identify and understand some of the symbolism at a second reading, which saw me through to the end. I'm sure that I missed a lot more without an understanding of Nineveh or Kilwinning, but the book has stayed with me and I think about it more often than some books I have enjoyed much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Early Hoban Gem, 3 Jan 2010
By Emdee (Staffordshire, UK) - See all my reviews
With the help of a lion-of-the-mind conjured from a palace wall, a young man seeks his wandering father, and finds himself.
First published in 1973 'The Lion' will provide readers new to Hoban with an introduction to the inter-weavings of story, symbolism and paradox from this modern literary master.
For Hoban fans who haven't yet read 'Lion' it's a masterpiece waiting to be savoured.
