Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The nüvi 1490T is a European navigator with an extra wide 5-inch screen. It has advanced multi-point route planning - ideal for longer journeys or trips with several stop-offs on the way. It has Lane Assist and Junction View for supreme route awareness. It includes Bluetooth® wireless

The Garmin nüvi 1490T

The Garmin nüvi 1490T

technology for hands-free phone calls, pan-European premium traffic alerts and ecoRoute™ to calculate a more fuel-efficient route. It also comes with Garmin's unique speed camera warning system to help you drive safely. An optional CityXplorer™ download it will even direct you via public transport (information varies between cities) or give you instructions for walking to your destination so you can use your sat-nav in and out of the car.

Simple navigation

The nüvi 1490T has a clear, intuitive menu so you can just turn it on and go. You simply need to touch the screen to look up addresses and get turn-by-turn directions. It announces street names before you turn so you always know where you are going, for example, "Turn right at Dell Road".

Plan Ahead

The nüvi 1490T includes advanced navigation features to take the worry out of travelling. With route planning you can save 10 routes, specify via points and preview simulated turns on the 1490T's large screen. In addition, nüvi 1490T automatically sorts multiple destinations to provide an efficient route for errands, deliveries or sales calls. A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

Simple navigation

Simple navigation

Lane Assist helps you get into the correct lane in plenty of time which is particularly useful near busy junctions. It illustrates lane options in the top left-hand corner of the main map screen, with the distance to the exit and which lanes to take. Junction View gives you an accurate preview of the road signs up ahead on the sat-nav screen together with an illustration of any lane changes required.

Traffic Alerts

Not every traffic service is equal. With Garmin you'll always know what lies ahead. And it's subscription-free, for life. The nüvi 1490T has pan-European traffic coverage. In the UK this is based on Trafficmaster data, which has extensive coverage of the road network (100% on motorways in England, Scotland and Wales). With traffic alerts from Garmin you'll always know how long you'll be held up and you can choose to be routed around the queues, with your sat-nav directing you all the way.

Great on the go - driving, walking or on public transport

You can take the nüvi 1490T is anywhere. Use to its full potential by downloading cityXplorer™ via www.Garmin.co.uk/cityXplorer to navigate like a local. The enhanced pedestrian mode gives you directions for walking including footpaths and shortcuts through parks - places you wouldn't be accessing while in your car. It also tells you where to catch trains, buses and tubes (dependent on the city), and how long it will take to reach your destination. cityXplorer even has public transport timetables to ensure you arrive at the station on time and help avoid long waits (dependent on the city).

To make the most of your Garmin sat-nav when exploring a new city, whether on a day trip, a holiday or for business, you can also add an optional AA City Guide. It tells you everything you need to know about your chosen city from attractions and places to eat, hotels and shops.

Make hands free phone calls

Keep your eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel with nüvi 1490T's integrated Bluetooth® wireless technology, microphone and speaker. Just pair with your compatible mobile phone and talk hands-free through the nüvi. You can also search for a place of interest on your Garmin nüvi (such as a hotel or restaurant) and call it simply by pressing the telephone icon on your sat-nav's screen. It means you can stow your phone in your glovebox, bag or pocket and let your sat-nav do the work. To see if your phone is compatible, go to www.garmin.com/bluetooth/phones.jsp

Speed cameras

Garmin has a unique, pan-European speed camera warning system, giving real-time, reliable, and accurate alerts. nüvi 1490T has the location of fixed, average speed, mobile and temporary cameras already built in. New or moved cameras are constantly tracked and the database is updated daily.

Where am I? safety feature

The Where am I? safety feature can be very helpful if you break down or need a certain service urgently. Just tap the car icon on your map screen for your exact coordinates, contact details for vehicle recovery services and directions to hospitals, police and petrol stations.

Anti-Theft feature

You can choose to activate The Garmin Lock™ anti-theft protection system to disable your Garmin sat-nav from performing any functions until a specific 4-digit PIN is typed in or the unit is taken to a predetermined location. Simply enter a 4-digit PIN and select a Security Location.  Write down your PIN and keep it in a safe place.  Each time you turn on the GPS, enter your PIN to unlock the GPS.  If you forget your PIN, you can go to your Security Location. Note: If you forget your PIN, and your Security Location, Garmin cannot unlock your GPS over the phone; you must send your GPS to Garmin to get it unlocked.

Go Green and save fuel

The ecoRoute™ fuel-saver feature enables you to choose a fuel-efficient route which could save you fuel and money. Simply choose the "less fuel" option and nüvi 1490T will calculate the route which will use the least fuel. You can also see the estimated cost of your journey as you plan it and get scored for your driving performance with the Driving Challenge - good for identifying areas for improvement.

Extras for your Garmin

There are lots of extras you can add to your Garmin sat-nav. These include travel guides such as AA Days Out, The Good Pub Guide, historical audio tours and more. You can also have some fun by adding celebrity voices. If you're a music fan you may want to download the locations festivals in the UK, or if you want to go on a shopping trip the locations of shopping centres. See www.garmin.co.uk/garminextras for more information.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some issues, but excellent overall, 15 Nov 2009
By M. Hammond (Hutton, Essex) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This seems to be a product that divides opinion. Yes, I recognise most of the criticisms that have been made by other reviewers, but I also believe they can be overcome to a large degree. For example:
1. Buy a dashboard mount: I find this invaluable, providing somewhere to tuck spare wiring, as well as making removal from the car that much easier.
2. True, the touchscreen can be frustrating at first, but with practice errors become much rarer.

Of course, the simplest way to use a SatNav is just to put your destination in and let the SatNav take you there, but we all know the difficulties that can create, when the SatNav thinks that impassable track is a great short cut, avoiding the need to take the main road miles further. The great advantage of the Nüvi 1490 is that you can use it away from the car to plan and simulate routes. If you think the SatNav is wrong you can always change the route by adding Waypoints.

As with human beings, it cannot be expected to respond to information it hasn't received, so if there is no FM signal or no information available, you may still be stuck in a queue. However, whilst driving from the North East to the Midlands recently, I twice had reason to be grateful for its ability to re-route in the face of traffic problems up ahead, so this is a useful feature, despite its limitations.

Finally, the Nüvi 1490 is not just a SatNav for the car. It's light-weight and its pedestrian mode means you can continue to us it when you have left the car, enabling you to avoid getting lost in town.

So, all in all, this SatNav may not yet be the answer to ALL our dreams, but it's still the best I have come across.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stick with it!, 29 Oct 2009
By Derek Manley "delman" (Derbyshire U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Nearly caused a divorce the first time we used it but that's not the machine's fault! Worked O.K. out of the box, easy to set up - connect to computer to update firm ware (do this on a regular basis for ongoing updates). Maps clear,(although a few glaring errors)spoken instructions clear although female voice less distinct. Traffic jam updates good. Third party POIs plentiful but remember to upload everything at one go as previous inputs are overwritten. Works for me - a decent piece of kit.
Addendum to above - If you are updating maps make sure you have, a very fast internet connection, a fast CPU, plenty of time... and patience. Took me about nine attempts over three days to finally get everything sorted. If the downloader looks as if it is doing something, it probably is! It's just flaming slow. Also I hope the update is major otherwise it's a lot of effort for maybe very little.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, 7 Jan 2010
Eventually selected this Garmin after looking at a lot of other GPS units.
I've used TomTom for years, so my main decision was whether I stuck with them - or finally bit the bullet and tried out another manufacturer.
I'm used to TomTom's UI - but every extra feature seems to cost a fortune and I loathe their customer service.
Quick summary - I'm glad I changed.

Bad things:
The Power Lead. Power lead for the unit is a thick cable that's like having a boa sprawled over your dashboard. I've absolutely no idea why they've made it so chunky. On the bright side though, I've got no worries that it's going to snag or break, I'm quite convinced it's going to outlast me.
It's crashed a couple of times. When it does crash it restarts and you with one button push you're back on your route. Not good it crashed, but at least it's a reasonably pain-free crash.
Manuals. Useless. Traffic was flakey on my first trip and I'd no idea why. I'd used the power lead, but kept on losing signal. Only when I got home and noticed another lead in the box, I realized that there was a separate FM antenna you have to plug into the power lead.

Good things:
Build Quality. It feels well made. Big sold slab of nice rubberized plastic, with a lovely bright massive screen on the front.
UI. Didn't take me long to realize I preferred it to TomTom.
Full Post-code recognition. Many units have this now, but it was lovely to get it.
Bluetooth Handsfree. Works beautifully. I turn on my GPS and it now automatically routes all calls to it - can just leave your phone in your pocket.
Traffic. Not a lot to say. It works, and it comes free with the unit (yes I'm talking to you TomTom with your overpriced optional FM aerials).
Road Names. I liked the sound of this, but definitely my favourite feature. Rather than just saying "turn left in x", it actually tells you the name of the road you need to take (and quite remarkably pronounces everything correctly). Makes a massive difference when driving in a town as you no longer have to glance at the GPS screen to check where it thinks it is, and therefore where the 2nd left actually is.

In summary, it's not perfect (so close it hurts a bit) - but I think it's the best value unit out there.
Lovely large screen, full post-code search, lane guidance, road-name speech, bundled FM traffic, nice simple, clear GUI, European Maps. As far as I'm aware, there's no other unit that will give you all this for the price.
