Synopsis

A former high school basketball star gets a second shot at life when he's miraculously transformed into a teenager and offered the opportunity to redefine his future. Back in 1989, Mike O' Donnell (Matthew Perry – TV's FRIENDS) had it all; not only was the 17-year-old senior the king of the basketball court, but college scouts were circling as well. But just as Mike's future began to glow brighter than ever before, he sacrificed everything in order to stay by his expectant girlfriend, Scarlet, and be a good father. Nearly 20 years later, Mike has just been passed over for a big promotion at work, his marriage is failing, and his teenage kids can't stand him. His dreams long gone and his family falling apart, Mike takes to staying with his best friend, Ned (Thomas Lennon), a former high school geek-turned-techno billionaire. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Mike is transported back into his teenage body (that of Zac Efron – HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL) and given the given the unique opportunity to relive his salad days. But while Mike may look 17 again, his thirtysomething outlook at life puts him hopelessly at odds with the class of 2009. When Mike discovers that by attempting to recapture his best years he could risk losing all the best things he ever experienced in life, the time comes to make a decision that could have a drastic impact on both his past and his future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Appeals to all ages, 9 Aug 2009
This film gave much more than i had anticipated. Thinking of more high school cheese and all that, well the film is more deep. Zac efron did some good and convincing acting in a difficult role. You will really notice this when compared old Matt's acting(chandler from friends)-dont worry its short! Ned (thomas lennon)was particularly hilarious also.

the story tells of Matt, a middleaged man with a troublesome relationship with his wife and 2 teen kids, on the verge of losing everything. His life, job and family is heading down a bad track as he wonders what "could have been" if his life had taken a different path. Reminded me somewhat of the whole "i could have been a professional footballer but i played with the big kids and injured my leg!" which seems to have affected a freakishly large percentage of the male uk population.

Anyway, his body becomes "17 again" so he can live out this dream. However Dad soon learns that instead of wollowing in self pity he is at risk of losing the best things that ever happened to him. Matt realises he took the right path, however crossroads have appeared for the family he cares so much for. Can he help them to choose the right path...?

As far as similar movies go:
both 13 going on 30 and big were opposite age switches but as 13.. spent most of the time with the character oohing and ahhing at random signs of adulthood id say 17 again was closer to Big is terms of a great film.

I'd say its still a "teen" film but went further than showing the extent of zac efron's hotness!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Big...again?, 25 Jul 2009
By D. Pond (Chatham, Kent, England) - See all my reviews

Although similar in theme to Tom Hanks' Big, Zac Efron's movie is a surprisingly grown-up affair. The themes and topics are mainly adult in nature and may confuse some of Efron's core tweenie audience. The main focus is on a father and husband's relationships with his estranged children and wife. The school relationships between the '17 again' protagonist take a back-row to Zac learning that even if his children don't need him any more, he still needs them. A lesson that many of us could learn.
A surprisingly enjoyable film for grown-ups who have forgotten how to relate to the child in them and need a lesson in taking responsibility for their own happiness and fulfillment.
Definitely worth a watch, even if just to see a marvelously nerdy and likeable performance from Thomas Lennon and for confirmation that Zac Efron has more to him than HSM suggests.

5.0 out of 5 stars hot! :), 13 Sep 2009

My sister, my daughter and myself took different flights home from US this summer..none of us were particulary impressed with movie choices..but we al ended up watching 17 Again!! And we all loved it so much!!

The whole Disney High School musical sttuff went over my head..but Zac is a bit of a revelation..apart from the fact that he is so hot..he is a really good actor! He has amazing screen presence..and yes, its true..women of a certain age around the globe are now totally hooked!

It was a lovely family film..no violence...just great family entertainment! :)
