5.0 out of 5 stars
Incredible, 29 Nov 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) (Video Game)
I bought this game after playing CoD 2 BRO, CoD 3, CoD 4 Modern Warfare, and CoD World at War, and thinking they were all brilliant. The only one I'd played multiplayer on was Modern Warfare, and got to level 42 before Modern Warfare 2 came out. I didn't think there was any way Infinity Ward could improve on it.
I was wrong.
I got MW2 on the release date and put the disk straight in. One criticism here was the massive 1 and a half hour update needed to run the game. When it loaded I went to the first level on single player. And was gobsmacked. I hate the word gobsmacked. But there's no alternative. The graphics are TV-news lifelike, the voice acting is great, the soundtrack is moody, and the realism (guns, vehicles etc.) is perfect.
I finished the story and went to multiplayer. The first thing I played was Terminal in Team Deathmatch. How IW improved the multiplayer's beyond me, but I'm now level 26 and I've found no great criticisms with it.
There are a few minor problems though. Sometimes you notice the odd graphical glitch (enemies spawning out of walls, people walking into walls) but they're few and far between. In parts AI is problematic (your teammates don't push forward, leaving you to do it, enemies keep running to the same places as their mates died) but again, very minor.
Anyway, this is easily the best game ever released, not just on the PS3 but ever. The storyline is great, the multiplayer is incredible, and it'll keep me going for ages!

5.0 out of 5 stars
An improvement all round, 20 Nov 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) (Video Game)
Absolutely fantastic campaign with great excitement and variety in missions and an interesting storyline. It is short but the quality does make up for the lack of quantity.
Multiplayer is much much better, every change is well thought out including deathstreak rewards to help when you are getting slaughtered and much bigger killstreak rewards to help you reak more havock. The levels are better and there are so many class and weapon options and new challenges that it will keep you entertained for ages.
Any negatives, well a few:
1) SMG's are nowhere near as effective as they should be and all feel too similar
2) Automatic shotgun is far too overpowered
3) The game often generates completely unbalanced team leading to annihilation for one team
They are small though but there are a couple of bigger gripes but they are not the fault of the game but the players:
1) The levels are well thought out and weapons are deadlier but this has led to a mass increase in camping. Running and gunning is not as effective as it was in Cod4 and you really need to think more. This is a GOOD thing for Infinity Ward to try and do as they have made the game more tactical but unfortunately a massive proportion of the players don't like to use their heads so instead they just lie down somewhere, usually with there aim pointed into a confined gap, guaranteed to kill whoever comes along. This can be beaten as you know where they are but some spots are tough and it is just boring.
Where this really gets bad is for sabotage (my favourite mode in CoD4) and capture the flag (mainly) as clan camping has emerged. Clans have figured out camping spots where they can remain in position with another camper covering their back in their camp position. This ends in massive standoffs where noone goes for the bomb/flag (cos there are camped sights aimed right at it) as team one is happy to camp defend and the other team toil to break them down. As the game goes on for a while the other team will break out and claim a quick win when they feel the time is right. It is very frustating but as i say, not the fault of the game.
2) People leave too quickly if they are under the cosh within the first couple of minutes even if the team could easily pull it back with some effort. Loads of times it has started 6 vs 6 and due to people taking a few deaths the game has gone to 6 vs 3 or 6 vs 2 in no time and there is no comback then. It is a shame but also not the fault of the game.
Overall this is a 9.5 out of 10 game, I love it and I know the hype has got people backs up against the game and it has it's haters but it really is a class game and is genuinely better than the last one.
It is not worth £55 though, that is a joke. Don't buy it for more than £40 out of principle, if this works others will do it.

Modern Warfare 2, 14 Nov 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) (Video Game)
So much hype surrounded Modern Warfare 2, and the question was continually asked: "Will it live up to expectations?". Quite simply, it does. Tremendously so. Infinity Ward prove that they know what is required when making a superb action game, which MW2 is, and have once again increased the standard for first-person shooter's forever.
Campaign (although again rather short) is an absolute blast, picking up 5 years after the events of COD4. Now under the command of "Soap" MacTavish himself, you play through the story predominantly as Gary "Roach" Sanderson of Task Force 141, and James Ramirez of the Army Rangers. Settings are far more varied than that of it's predecessor, ranging from Afghanistan, Northern Russian, the United States and even the slums of Brazil. Wherever the story takes you, it doesn't let you down. Inparticularly the infiltration of the gulag, which was the standout mission for me. In terms of actual gameplay though, it is very similar to that of COD4. Is that a bad thing though? Of course not. High in quality and enjoyable to play, it provides players with intense, action-packed levels and engaging combat situations, and although the plot can become slightly muddled in places, it barely effects what is a thrilling campaign. However, there are a few subtle and interesting additions, most notably the slow-motion breach element, which can be found on several missions. The snowmobiles also I'm sure will be a hit with fans. Veteran is once again a difficult challenge, but COD addicts im sure will be up for it. Also, it was queried why the game was pushed up to an 18, and I myself was a bit puzzled by this. That was however until the mission entitled "No Russian" came along. The slaughter of literally hundreds of innocent civillians isn't exactly 'welcoming', yet contributes to the atmosphere of that mission, and provides the game with a much more ruthless feel.
Special Ops mode is arguably the most sizeable addition to the game, whereby players (either solo, split-screen or online) fight their way through story-related missions to earn stars (69 overall). These are usually no more than 5-10 minutes in length, yet prove surprisingly addictive and are certainly worthwile to play.
Multi-player, as COD4 did, will absolutely dominate until the inevitable sequel comes out a few years from now. Expanded greatly from the original, it goes into far greater depth, with the option of choosing your own killstreaks being one of the most ingenious ideas encorporated. New games modes are few and far between; 3rd person mode for some matches being the only major addition. The system is more complex yet more rewarding, and with ranks going up to 70 now, playing time for specifically online will be outrageously long. Better than COD4? Only time will tell...
On a personal note, it is very refreshing to be playing a game predominantly as a BRIT, rather than the macho Americans we seem to be stuck with endlessly. My only dissapointment was how the game ended. I'm not talking about the final mission as such, but more the unknown feeling of what happens next. Perhaps I'm being too padantic, but it is rare these days that games have a PROPER ending; i.e - no cliffhanger. Uncharted 2 is the obvious exception to this, and in that review I asked which of these two would be game of the year. And to be honest, I don't have an answer. What was your playing time on COD4? 'Cos it's gonna be even longer on MW2...
