Wait and see if they fix it, 23 Oct 2009
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Dont rush to buy this game yet.
As many of the reviewers have mentioned, it is a decent game, but it is not finished.
As things stand, 2 weeks after release, the multiplayer doesnt work on XBL, it took codemasters a week to admit this, and the latest is 'we arent sure why it doesnt work, but are looking into it'. At the moment if you are lucky enough to get into a game, or if you set up a private game, there are only 2 maps on each of the 2 game types.
Thats ok in itself, but there are a lot of flaws in the single player game. It is a decent game if you can put up with some flaws, but IMO it is not a patch on the original on PC, a bit of a shame when they have had 10 years or so to work on this!
Graphics are decent, but not jaw dropping. Personally i am more concerned with the gameplay than the looks, but the dodgy AI, moody save system which doesnt always work, 101 bugs and glitches etc etc etc take the shine off what could and should have been the game of the year. Very short also, took me less than 8 hours on normal difficulty, and I wasnt rushing, im sure others have done it in 5-6. One other plus, the sound is very good.
This game appears to have been rushed out to beat COD by a few weeks and boost sales. I would have preferred them to wait until it was finished.
Have a look on the codemasters forums before buying. It seems they are working on a patch to fix some of the many bugs and get multiplayer working. They also intend releasing some dlc in the next couple of weeks. Wait and see if it does actually get fixed before purchasing or the chances are you will be as frustrated as the majority of people who bought it on release. Good chance the price will be back below £30 as well by the time it is worth buying.
Ps - google operation flashpoint 2 mission codes, and the 6 retailer codes for the extra missions are freely available. I finished all 6 in 45-60 mins or so, but hey they are free!

4.0 out of 5 stars
Don't compare to COD!, 14 Oct 2009
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Right never wrote one of these before but thought I had to add my two pence. Firstly I saw one review which said that CODMW2 was going top blow this out of the water, and yes this is true, however they are very different games!!! CODMW2 is an arcade game and very very good and I can't wait for it to come out and still play COD4 now with mates to keep me going until it does. However Flashpoint is not an arcade game but a simulator!! In real life you can get shot in the leg and bleed out from it and die, just as you can take three rounds to the chest and survive, life is strange like that, but I digress.
There are problems with this game don't get me wrong! in fact the comment of looking after three children with guns does ring true to me, however these are US marines we're talking about, so there is some realism to that!! I played the original flashpoint when it came out, loved it but didn't understand a thing about the controls, such as formations, line, vee, wedge, column, whats the difference? Now I actually serve in the military I understand, and can say they hold these formations better than some real soldiers I have worked with do!! The tactics are spot on, the radio traffic although different to British voice procedures are very good, and the fact it takes a good 10-15 seconds to set up a rocket launcher is again spot on!!
This game is not perfect, however it is with out a doubt the most realistic shooter I have played, yes you command a group of muppets but be aware of that and adjust your tactics accordingly! Yes you are shooting at little stick figures, but at 300 meters that's what people look like, and it is hard to hit your target. At the moment the pros outweigh the cons, and if the last flashpoint was anything to go by there will be plenty of add ons to keep you going.
In summary if you are expecting a CODMW2 clone, JOG ON. However if you want a tactical shooter which will challenge you (both your game playing ability and your mental state) then give it a go, if your not sure rent it and see what you think, however if this is your first Flashpoint game give it more that a couple of hours game time before you make your decision, I would recommend 8-10 hours if at that point you don't like it then it won't be for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars
A huge let down..., 11 Oct 2009
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
I've been playing this game for a few days now, since buying it on the release date, and after really sticking at it, completing half of the campaign, and trying out all of the multiplayer features, I couldn't believe how bad it really is.
I'll start with the good points, since there are so few:
The graphics are absolutely awesome, and the lighting effects/atmospheres are really well done.
It is really satisfying pulling off well planned team commands, but unfortunately, this relies heavily on the games AI. More on that later.
That's about it.
As for the negative, it's hard to know where to start.
The game looks very pretty, but feels INCREDIBLY out of date. Things such as game menus, weapon selection screens and objective viewers are just difficult to use, and having to zoom in and click around on your map in order to tell your AI team-mate that, actually, you'd rather he didn't run into a minefield, all while being bombarded with gunfire and mowed down by attack choppers does get a bit frustrating.
The single worst thing about the whole game is the AI. Not only does this game suffer from the usual annoying glitches (team-mates getting stuck in doorways, not noticing when there's an enemy right in front of them, not responding to orders), but on several occasions, my own team has actually shot my character to death while trying to
randomly engage enemies in the area. Annoying.
Playing this game did not make me feel like a US marine squad leader, it made me feel like a babysitter, tasked with looking after 3 (stupid) children with guns.
It's so infuriating to spend 10 minutes scouting out an enemy building with your binoculars before ordering your team to sneak in to attack behind you by crawling through the long grass, just to find that they all stand up for no reason when you're nearly there and blow your cover. I spent most of the 'stealth' missions telling the team to stay back, while I had more success attacking enemies on my own!
Also, the MASSIVE world map was one of the things that the game developer (codemasters) really hyped up. Apparently it will take you 9 hours to run across the map, saying that you can explore this huge land and roam at your leisure through non-linear missions. This annoyed me especially, because this is a lie.
Yes, the map really is huge, and yes, you can travel over the whole thing if you want. But there is NEVER any reason to! 99% of the map is just forest and field with nothing to discover but the odd enemy patrol, and all of the missions are as linear as they come. You are often on a strict time limit to complete objectives, making exploration impossible, and for each mission you are simply dropped off on a different part of the map, which surely renders the massive explorable area completely pointless?
I understand that this game is meant to be difficult (and it is), but that shouldn't make it frustrating. This is meant to be 'as close to war as you'll ever want to get!', but the thing is, it's just not that realistic, either. You can die with one or two bullets to practically anywhere on your body, which IS realistic. What isn't, is that your enemies seem to be able to survive a full magazine to the chest before finally giving in.
I feel really let down and betrayed by the developers after playing this game, since so much of what they said was good about this game is simply not true. The game looks beautiful, but seems as though no effort whatsoever has gone into the actual game play.
Multiplayer is no better, with the amount of AI and atmosphere glitches doubling, and (the worst part) no option to reload a checkpoint! Meaning that, if you all die, you have to start ALL OVER AGAIN!
Avoid this game. I hope that in future the developers realize that after spending so much time hyping up the amazing features in their games, maybe they should actually include some of those features in the product.
