4.0 out of 5 stars Good Value - Get What You Pay For, 19 July 2009
By Paul S. Hills "Game Veteran" (Belfast, N. Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Samsung HT-BD1220 2.1 ch Blu-ray Home Cinema System - Black (Electronics)
I bought this system on the strength of a 5 Star review in WhatHiFi - and the fact that it was the only Blu-Ray Home Cinema System retailing at under £400 that could handle Dolby TrueHD! It is worth noting that their rating has since been downgraded to 4 stars, which perhaps explains why I wasn't totally blown away by the system.

It looks good - the speakers were taller than expected, while the BD player is quite large. I wonder if an average 800mm stand could accommodate it? The menu is simple enough once you get your head around it and the touch sensitive controls are slick.

Now the important thing - how does it sound? Well, it is 2.1 so don't be expecting full-blown surround. If you want something that significantly enhances your tv sound, then this is it. The sub is meaty and with the volume turned up, it will fill the room with sound (our living room is 12' * 12') - the satellites seem to handle loud volumes very well. Voices are pretty clear and there are options for adjusting speaker distance, sub volume and av sync (if the audio is slightly off).

The system does have an option for Virtual Surround, but I am not impressed with this - voices sound thick. DVDs look and sound great, with impressively upscaled picture quality, though I was disappointed with the sound quality on some of my older music DVDs. Audio CDs & MP3s sound very good however.

To summarise, you get what you pay for - I wasn't wanting speakers and wires all over my living room. This system meets my requirements and provides the boost to my tv sound that I was looking for.

2.0 out of 5 stars cooling fan is a big distraction, 28 Oct 2009
This review is from: Samsung HT-BD1220 2.1 ch Blu-ray Home Cinema System - Black (Electronics)
I needed a speaker system to make up for the feeble speakers in my Samsung flat screen tv. I wanted the same make as I thought it would mean no compatibility issues with installation.
It was easy to set up , but the cooling fan is rather loud and is quite intrusive at quiet scenes - so I would suggest this is a system to avoid or at least you should get a demonstration of it first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Samsung HTBD 1220, 26 Dec 2009
By T. Harris (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Samsung HT-BD1220 2.1 ch Blu-ray Home Cinema System - Black (Electronics)
i have been looking for a 2.1 or 3.1 blu ray system for a while, as the room I wanted to put it in does work for a full 5.1 surround system. I bought this system last week.

The system was fairly easy to set up and I have now connected it via the set top box (Freeview Humax)and the sound quality is very good, and so much better as one would expect than the TV's own speakers, and it makes me wonder why I took so long to upgrade to an impressive sound system provided by the Samsung.

I went out and bought my first blu ray dvd, and the combination of strking picture and excellent sound added significantly to the fun of watching the film, so I'm very pleased with this system.

The system is internet enabled but you have to buy a Samsung wireless router in order to connect, which I find rather annoying as I have a perfectly good wireless system and I'm not sure if I'm prepared to buy a seperate wireless router.

The other reason I have scored this 4 out of 5 - and I'd give it more like 4.5, is that while the ipod docking station works well, you can only control the ipod via the remote and you have to use the TV screen to scroll to your music or photos. This seems a design flaw as it would be so much easier to control via the ipod itself. I also tried to control the ipod via the USP port on the front of the unit, but don't yet seem able to do so.

I pondered buying this system as I was initally put off by previous user comments about the noise of the fan, which personally I don't find to be a problem, in fact my Humax PVR which sits along side it, has a nosier fan, and once you have the music coming through you would have to have very quite phase of music to even come close to hearing the fan, so I'm delighted to say the fan is nothing to be concerned about in my view.

So if you want a Blue ray 2.1 system with quite a big capability this could be a system you may want to consider, and it looks pretty good, but the satellite speakers look a little cheap but produce a very acceptable sound. The main unit is quite big but probably no larger than the Humax unit. So overall I'm very happy with this (after my week or ownership) and for the money I think this represents very good value; I paid £292 + delivery from Amazon.
