4.0 out of 5 stars different from the norm but........, 14 Oct 2009

This review is from: Texhnolyze Collection [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
I really enjoyed Texhnolyze, but even after watching it through twice I'm still not too sure how to evaluate it.

This anime series is very different from anything else I've seen in recent years- it is equal parts action and drama and set in a sci-fi environment.

Once you see this series for your self I'm sure you will agree that it is hauntingly beautiful to look at, and the director is not afraid to show this off with barely any dialog for accompaniment, as a matter of fact to begin with there is no dialog at all (I think the 1st words are spoken just over half way through the 1st episode) this absence of speech is no bad thing either- the opening moments feel very suspenseful and gripping as you try to piece together some sort of plotline from all the vague scenes you see. When the 1st words are spoken it should become clear that this script has been written to perfection. Everything each character says poses a new question, and no piece of information you are given feels irrelevant.

As far as characters go- the cast here is solid through and through and I can almost guarantee that every character will intrigue you enough for you to be begging to know more by the end of each episode.

The way everything has been drawn and animated in this series is nothing short of amazing. Each and every character has a huge sense of importance about them, they all feel central to the story. I loved the character designs in this series and felt that they were stunning to watch- this coupled with the many amazingly detailed locations and breathtaking set pieces made me wonder- could this be the best anime series ever made?

As I got further through the series the slow paced speechless scenes began to grate on me a little- I wanted for the pace to pick up ever so slightly, but no luck, even some of the action scenes became a little boring to watch as some are shown in a very abstract way (lots of coloured filters and still images).

It may be worth mentioning that I disliked the ending as well- but it is up for interpretation so I don't want to get into detail and spoil it for you.

Overall- I have dropped one star for the sluggish pace and abstract fight scenes, but other than that- I think there is a good story to be told in this series and it is told in very appealing style and using awesome looking characters to boot. So if you like action and an intelligent story don't hesitate to add this set to your collection just bare in mind that you need to be both patient and open minded in order to enjoy everything on offer here.

Thanks for reading!
