Bust Through the Heavens With Your Drill, 13 July 2009
This review is from: Gurren Lagann - Volume 1 [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
Strap yourself in and brace yourself for the biggest anime event of 2009. This is Gurren Lagann part 1. The story starts with young Simon (pronounced sea-moan) living a sheltered life (quite literally) underground. Orphaned as a child, hasn't has the best life and he spends the most part of his time drilling tunnels for the oppressive underground leaders he serves. That is until he comes across Lagann; a mecha who he manages to activate. Accompanied by his 'bro', the hotheaded, loudmouth Kamina and his newfound mecha they drill their way to the surface. After getting their first taste of freedom, the duo are confronted by the villainous beastmen and their huge mecha, known as gunmen who terrorise the surface by day. They also bump into feisty red head Yoko who explains that the surface isn't all it's cracked up to be. With war breaking out, Kamina gathers human resistance and forms team Gurren. This ragtag group of heroes go about taking down the beastmen forces and achieving peace on the surface.
If I had to summarize Gurren Lagann, I'd have to say that it is 'pure entertainment'. Everything, from the chracters to the animation is spot on and most definetly memorable. Created by studio Gainax, the acclaimed group that brought the anime world classic titles such as Evangelion and FLCL, Gurren Laggan truly lives up to it's hype and surpasses expectations. Those familiar with Gainax may be familiar with the hyper active and fast paced style of the story telling that Gurren Laggan undertakes. Everything about this show is BIG and over the top, and that makes for a thoroughly enjoyable anime that feels very big budget and high production. The characters are every bit as crazy and larger than life that can be expected from a show like this. That added with the way they interact and bounce off eachother makes for a well rounded and likeable cast that can be funny, relatable and most importantly, realistic.
This DVD set contains the first 9 episodes (out of 27) over 2 discs. These episodes are as follows
1.Bust through the heavens with your drill!
2.I said I'm going to pilot that thing!
3.Who do you think you are, having two faces!?
4.Does having so many faces makes you great?
5.I don't get it, not one bit!
6.Sit in the hot tub 'till you're sick!!
7.You're gonna do it!!
8.Later, buddy
9.What, exactly, is a human?
Unfortunately, the on disc extras are pretty disapointing with textless openings and closings as well as trailers for other beez animes being the highlight. There is also the choice of whether to watch in Japanese or English.
This first set of episodes make for a nice introduction to the characters and the world of Gurren Laggan. A sure runner for anime of the year, Gurren Lagann looks set to take the cup this year and it's only going to get better. Roll on volume 2.

Epic Manly Anime, with Drills, Anime of the Year, 7 Jun 2009
This review is from: Gurren Lagann - Volume 1 [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
(I believe this listing on Amazon is for the normal edition)
Before I write anything else, it's worth noting for this series only, I will name a few things this anime contains before the review in question.
1 - Drills.
2 - Manlyness
3 - Mecha
4 - Large Breasted Lead female.
5 - Awesomeness beyond anything known before in Anime.
6 - ROW ROW FIGHT DA POWA.
Now my review.
This anime was made by Gainax, the people behind Evangelion.
Humankind has long since lived underground in Villages, unknown to them that above them lies a surface, a sky, a wide open world that has yet to be explored, a world with unknown dangers.
Such dangers are the Beastmen, these beings exist on the surface controlling Gunmen that more often or not are used to kill any human who dared step up onto the surface.
Enter Simon, a young boy living in Jiha village, he speands his days drilling holes and expanding the Village and just living out his life the best way he can.
Enter Kamina, a manly character who is also the *Big Bro* of Simon, he has a fearless attitude and an almost carefree spirit, he longs to finally go up onto the surface.
Enter Yoko, a young female character who wears not very much clothing, a large breasted female with a huge Gun. And a firey spirit.
Enter Boota, a pigmole like animal that joins Simon and Kamina on their adventures.
What do you get when you pair all 3? Team Gurren.
Without Spoiling an epic Mecha named Gurren Lagann Is born, Beastmen are battled, bathouses full of skimpy clothed females is visited. And more.
This is regarded by many as one of the best anime shows ever produced.
Suitable for Teens/Adults and older, this isnt a childish anime, and is one of the most entertaining shows ever made.

utterly awesome., 18 Jan 2010
This review is from: Gurren Lagann - Volume 1 [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
this anime is, put in its most basic form, a glorious, awe-inspiring example of the mecha anime genre, and is perhaps the pinnacle of it. all of the beloved meme's are here in abundance, and the show doesnt take itself in the slightest bit seriously whilst bringing with it a message of optimism, that ultimately so long as you truly believe in yourself you have no need to fear what the world can throw at you. the characters are funny, scary, outright insane in some cases, and so well done you cant help but care for them in their travails; i would literally defy anyone who watches this anime not to laugh, rage or cry with the characters...
as is the standard fare for studio gainax, this anime is very complex beneath the surface, but it goes about it in the exact opposite way to gainax' last great "mecha" anime, evangelion, to the extent that in its outlook it is considered the "anti-eva" and this is something the show revels in. do not come to it expecting (too much) existential angst, and do not come to it expecting "serious business", but do expect to come back from the show with a lighter heart and a tear in your eye.
