The Broken Bond, 2 Mar 2009
This review is from: Naruto Unleashed - Complete Series 5 [DVD] (DVD)
With a brand new Hokage and the threat of the sand Ninja far behind them, the Leaf village is at a rare stage of prosperity. However, darkness is slowly engulfing one of the village's inhabitants.
After being defeated by his brother, Sasuke has become a shadow of his former self and has become even broodier (if thats possible). The frustration of his defeat coupled with his jealousy of comrade Naruto's increasing skills leads Sasuke down a dark path. The series begins by swiftly concluding the 'land of tea' filler arc in which Naruto and the rest of his squad have to protect a runner as he participates in a race to decide the future of his village. Once this is dealt with, things really start to get good.
In all his emo angst, Sasuke abandons the Leaf village in search of more power which will ultimately lead him straight into the hands of Orochimaru. Sasuke is accompanied by the sound Ninja 4 who briefly appear during series three's invasion of Konoha story arc. Therefore, the newly appointed chunin, Shikamaru, assembles the Sasuke retrieval squad which comprises of himself, Choji, Neji, Kiba and of course Naruto. Shortly after, they all set off to retrieve thei comrade. What follows is some non stop Naruto action that hs made the series so great. Even at this later stage of the story, the fights still remain as clever and intriguing as ever. This segment of the series sees each member of the Sasuke retrieval squad face off, one on one with one of the sound ninja, thus leaving the others to go on ahead. This trend follows suit until only Naruto remains to face Sasuke in the legendary fight at the monumental Hokage statues. Although this often becomes repetetive and predictable, the fights themselves are enough to make you forget about that and become hooked. Moreover, these fights allow the series to provide some much welcomed characterisation of some of the characters who until now have not been fleshed out. On top of this there is also the memorable battle between the bone crunching sound ninja Kimmimaro and Gaara, making this boxset, a series that can't be missed.
As usual the animation and music are brilliant, but like previous Naruto releases, the only special features are a colection of old trailers for other manga entertainment releases. Once again, you have the choice of watching in English or Japanese with english subtitles.
Series 5 is a crucial part of the Naruto saga and is important as it is the building blocks leading towards the sequel series 'Naruto Shippuuden. The events and action that take place in this series have major effects on the future of the Naruto series' as a whole. It can be said that this stage of the story is a turning point for Naruto. Furthermore, this collection contains the last full series of Naruto to be entirely non-filler. After this the series does not follow the manga and becomes completely original (and definetly inferior) filler material. (Albeit a few episodes of the next series which will finish off the story from this set). So for those who have been collecting the Naruto boxsets so far, series 5 is an essential purchase as it carries on the story and introduces one of the most important story arcs of the series as a whole. For newcomers to Naruto, start on series 1 because you wont have a clue what is going on. This boxset contains episodes 104 - 130. It is fantastic to see that Naruto is still as entertaining and charming as ever, and it still manages to pull off it's fair share of suprises and plot twists that leave the viewer wanting more. So, as this is possibly the last truly great Naruto boxset to released (until shippuden that is) it is a really great purchase for all Naruto fans.

Some of the best fights yet, 14 Feb 2010
This review is from: Naruto Unleashed - Complete Series 5 [DVD] (DVD)
This boxset contains some of the most enjoyable battles in the series so far as well as providing some characterisation of the supporting cast including two of my favourites, Rock Lee and Shikamaru. By this point if you don't like the long fights intermingled with Flashbacks, you never will, but if you enjoy this approach you are in for a treat. The great thing about many of the battles in this series is that it's usually the combatants intelligence and not just their power that wins out the day. The series culminates with the fight that has been teased since the show began, Naruto vs Sasuke. It's epic but you'll need to check out series 6 to see it in all of its glory.
At the current price fans of ninjas and animation really can't go wrong.
