Synopsis

After the climactic battle with the Red priest, Lina and her ragtag group of misfit Slayers return for the second season 'Slayers Next'.
The Claire Bible is a rare mystical object that contains immense magical power...so of course, Lina is just dying to get her claws on it. However she is not the only one who wants it. For starters, Zelgadis, the half man, half golem is after it in the hopes of restoring his body to normal and a mysterious priest by the name of Xellos also wants it for unknownreasons. Once again, Lina is accompanied by he trusty (and rather stupid sidekick Gourry), the hyperactive 'keeper of justice' Amelia, and of course Zelgadis. In this volume, the heroes become bodyguards for 2 opposing people, fight an immortal who made a pact with a monster and to top it off - took a trip to the hot springs (woohooo!!!!).

Slayers NEXT is basically more of what the first series was like, but I'm not complaining. The familiar Slayers wit and charm is present and the characters are a likeable as ever. Especially Gourry with his quickfire one liners and Lina with her crazy money hungry attitude. The second series of Slayers has slightly cleaner animation so overall NEXT looks more polished than it's predecessor. Fans of the first series will recognise most of the music from the episodes in this disc as most of it is the same, making for a familiar experience. However there are brand new opening and closing theme songs, which gives a bit of distinction between the two series'. They are much catchier than the previous ones as well.

The first volume of slayers NEXT contains the first 6 episodes. These are:
1.The sudden pinch! The terror of the monstrous Zoamelgustav
2.The roguish priest! His name is Xellos
3.A wonderful business! Being a bodyguard isn't easy!
4.An ancient pledge! One who seeks immortality!
5.Staying behind for the sake of love!
6.You can't escape! The return of the obsessive Martha!

People who have not seen the first series can still watch this second installment and get a fair amount of enjoyment out of it. There is not a great deal of characterisation, back story or complicated plotlines, but that makes for n easy watch and makes it instantly accessable to newcomers of the show. What Slayers does have is some great comedy and simple, easy to digest plot lines, making this a show that is really easy to watch.
The main strength of Slayers is definetly the cast of characters and the way they bounce of one another. The way that the show has maintained a stable amount of humour right through to the second series is also impressive. Even in the 'serious' scenes, like fight scenes, there are always jokes being thrown in at every possible opportunity, Making Slayers a show that will keep you entertained throughout. Volume 1 of Slayers NEXT is just as enjoyable and fun to watch as the previous discs. It has opened up an interesting story arc and has maintained the fantastic humour. A great start to series 2.
